    Solidarity with Pacific, Polynesian, & Melanesian political struggles is a life long task for those committed to it.

    As a much younger unionist and activist in 1982 I attended a Nuclear Free Pacific Forum with an NZ delegation led by NZFOL’s Jim Knox and various other union people. A three day conference at a venue not too far from the then Club Med quickly saw calls in the local French media for the conference building to be fumigated after the likes of us had used it. French military people were always about brandishing their arms.

    The funny thing was we had to remain in Kanaky due to airport problems for another week, so we ended up staying with locals and totally immersed in their lifestyle and history which is a great way to meet people and understand their fight. Even met Jean-Marie Tjibaou and a number of younger members of various factions.
