Trump gives best speech of his presidency – let’s hope it isn’t enough for him to win

I stayed up and watched Trump’s speech from Mt Rushmore live on Fox News last night.

It was probably the ‘best’ speech of his Presidency in that it appealed broadly to Republicans and Independents.

His zeroing in on culture war was clever…

“Make no mistake: this left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution. In so doing, they would destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence, and hunger, and that lifted humanity to new heights of achievement, discovery, and progress.”

“Against every law of society and nature, our children are taught in school to hate their own country, and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes, but that were villains. The radical view of American history is a web of lies — all perspective is removed, every virtue is obscured, every motive is twisted, every fact is distorted, and every flaw is magnified until the history is purged and the record is disfigured beyond all recognition.”

“Those who seek to erase our heritage want Americans to forget our pride and our great dignity, so that we can no longer understand ourselves or America’s destiny. In toppling the heroes of 1776, they seek to dissolve the bonds of love and loyalty that we feel for our country, and that we feel for each other. Their goal is not a better America, their goal is the end of America.”

“Americans are the people who pursued our Manifest Destiny across the ocean, into the uncharted wilderness, over the tallest mountains, and then into the skies and even into the stars.”

…many Americans may have agreed with the anger and outrage of Black Lives Matter after the brutal killing of George Floyd, and they may have agreed with the pulling down of Confederate Statues, but when the very woke want to start pulling down statues of treasured founding fathers, many Americans might recoil.

Trump was desperately trying to appeal to that audience and it was a very good speech playing to those culture war fears.

However.

My reading is that many Americans have had negative interactions with Police and that there is a genuine sense that the Cops have become a law unto themselves and require urgent reform combined with Trump’s spectacular failure with Covid meaning that Trump and the Republicans are looking at one of the great defeats in American Political History.

The way Covid is carving through Republican territory right now, Trump has forgotten the first responsibility of the State, to protect the people and ‘his’ people are the ones suffering.

The only way Trump wins now, will be by suppressing the vote in such an enormous way, (because of Covid restrictions), that he just attempts to gerrymander the vote outright.

I think Mt Rushmore is the last gasp of a toxic President who was always Intellectually out of his depth and whose ignorance damaged the Presidency almost beyond repair.

  1. Well said Martyn. The bias of the NZ media about this speech is remarkable. I watched it too the media lazily labling it as divisive doesn’t do justice to just how good this speech was in conveying what is as close as possible to a unifying conservative view of America and its achievements.

    1. Declare yourself above the law

    2. Use racist fear-mongering. Demand “law and order” and describe protesters as “thugs”, “lowlife” and “rioters and looters”. Describe Covid-19 as “Kung-Flu”. Retweet posts from white supremacists. etc

    3. Appoint an attorney general more loyal to you than to America, and politicize the Department of Justice so it’s lenient on your loyalists and comes down hard on your enemies. Have it lighten the sentence of a crony convicted of lying under oath. Order investigations of industries you dislike.

    4. Fire US attorneys who are investigating you.

    5. Fire independent inspectors general who are looking into what you’ve done. Crush any whistleblowers you find.

    6. Demean and ignore the intelligence community. Appoint a director of national intelligence more loyal to you than to America. Demand that the head of the FBI pledge loyalty to you.

    7. Pack the federal courts with judges and justices more loyal to you than to the constitution.

    8. Politicize the Department of Defense so generals will back whatever you order. Refer to them as “my generals”. Have them help clear out protesters. Order the military to surveil protesters. Tell governors you’ll bring in the military to stop protesters.

    9. Purge your party of anyone disloyal to you and turn it into a mindless, brainless, spineless cult.

    10. Get rid of accumulated experience and expertise in government. Demean career public servants. Hollow out the state department, the Department of Justice, Health and Human Services, and public health.

    11. Reward donors and cronies with bailouts, tax breaks, subsidies, government contracts, regulatory rollbacks and plum jobs. Put their lobbyists in charge of your agencies. Distribute $500bn in pandemic assistance to corporations in secret, without any oversight.

    12. Coddle dictators. Don’t criticize their human rights abuses. Refuse to work with the leaders of other democracies. Withdraw from international treaties.

    A couple more:
    16. Downplay real threats to the nation, such as a rapidly spreading pandemic. Lie about your utter failure to contain it. Muzzle public health experts. Urge people to go back to work even as the pandemic worsens in parts of the country.

    19. Use rightwing propaganda machines like Fox News and conspiracy theory peddling One America News to inundate the country with your lies. Ensure that the morally bankrupt chief executive of Facebook allows you to spread your lies on the biggest media machine in the world.

    20. Suppress the votes of people likely to vote against you. Intimidate voters of color. Encourage Republican governors to purge voter rolls, demand voter ID and close polling places.

    And the Trump card:
    24. If you’re voted out of office notwithstanding all this, refuse to leave.

  4. Landslide for Trump in 2020. 99% of police are good. The left over-reached BADLY when they started attacking statues like Abraham Lincoln and abolitionists. Also attacking George Washington. They have no perspective of the times that the founders lived in and the fact that many founders actually abhorred slavery.

  6. Meanwhile people proclaiming Treaty Rights over the area were met with a wall of enforcers in riot gear and shields. Some were arrested and taken away.

    The Black Hills, where Mount Rushmore is carved, are unceded territory in the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 and acknowledged by a 1980 Supreme Court ruling in the United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians.

    Several groups of Natives had planned to travel to the monument to voice their opposition to Trump’s visit, his policies that are seen as challenges to tribal sovereignty and the very presence of Mount Rushmore, which features faces of American presidents carved into a mountain held sacred by many tribes in the region.

    The Black Hills are part of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, and the country’s highest court ordered compensation in the millions of dollars to the Lakota for their illegal seizure, an offer the Lakota have refused for decades.   7. I quite agree, the woke, emboldened by their self righteousness and ironic intolerance of anyone who dares to think differently or as they like to think of themselves, diversely, will inevitably topple one too many symbols and the tide will irresistibly push back.

    Trump may be a lot of things but he has not missed the obvious.
