Three Billboards In A Dirty River, Near Christchurch, Canterbury – Greenpeace
Greenpeace is putting up three billboards in the in the algae-filled Selwyn near Christchurch to remind the Prime Minister of her promises on New Zealand rivers.
The first billboard comprises a larger than life image of Jacinda Ardern, quoting the PM:
We will clean up our rivers.
Over the next few months the Ardern Government is finalising its freshwater reforms designed to turn around the health of the country’s waterways.
Greenpeace is worried that the Government might have overlooked an important element for protecting rivers – cutting synthetic nitrogen fertiliser.
The last billboard will remind her of this vital part of the solution.
The billboards will be put up by a team of Greenpeace activists in protective clothing upstream of Coes Ford on the Selwyn River on Thursday 13th February, 11am.

David Parker is Minister for the Environment.
Have to ask, is he the best person to hold that portfolio?
If he were given a report card of performance to date, would it be a pass mark?

For one thing, he signed off with mega-corp Rio Tinto for removal of a shed load of hazardous waste, here in Aotearoa, with “a handshake”??

Its and intermittent illegal toilet outlet into the stream. Its been there for years and has proven hard to find

2nd Wastewater Discharge into Wairarapa River This Year
Almost half a million litres of wastewater has spewed into a river near Martinborough, after an “ongoing issue” at a treatment plant resulted in two discharges in as many weeks. The incidents come after a year of water contamination problems for the South Wairarapa town.
E. Coli bacteria readings prompted boil water notices and sparked an independent review which said “it was a matter of luck” one of the incidents was not a repeat of the Havelock North event.
By the end of 2019 South Wairarapa District Council handed over water management responsibilities to Wellington Water, which is now dealing with the current wastewater overflow. More at the link.
You can add this to the list of broken promises. David Parker and Sage are hopeless at guarding the enviroment. Sage has ruled out even doing research into GE solutions to our unwanted animals such as rats and possums. The enviroment is on everyone’s mind so it is odd the Greens are losing traction when they should be coming into their own. It is down to their MPS and in particular there leaders
