  1. Jolly good geo political insights into what’s really going on and thank you for that. I think you are right on the money. All these leaders scheme and manipulate in such ways. Nothing is ever done in a vacuum, nothing really is happenstance. Not in politics.

But in a way, for many years we were described as a south pacific nation, yet lately it has crept into our vocabulary we are an ‘ Asian nation’.

    We are not.

Neither by tradition nor by political design. In this instance I find myself siding ( begrudgingly regards the 5 eyes ) with the political intrigue you are describing in vivid detail and which appears, by all accounts, … to be the truth.

These new Samoan leaders, wish to keep the Chinese Navy out and avoid becoming a vassal / puppet state of the CCP.

    Good on them.

    1. Well we gave them our Chicken Poxs and wiped out thousands with the Spanish flu and now you want to send in a gunboat you need to get real matey.

      1. Settle down sunshine. My wink 😉 indicated I was only joking.

More seriously, could this turn into a physical fight? Fiji has come close to it a couple of times and we pulled hundreds of Fijian Indians off the islands in the past because we thought they faced a significant risk of genocide.

In which case you’d want some capability standing off, in readiness.

  2. Tiny Pacific territories have long been entangled in colonial, imperialist and economic plans of larger nations. A flash harry new port funded by China would have been embarrassing indeed for the US in particular, with their unincorporated territory of American Samoa just a few km East across the international dateline from the former Western Samoa.

To what extent Chris speculation is correct is not clear yet, though I note the new PM has made statements critical of China, and the proposed constitutional changes. Whether FAST or HRPP ends up in Govt. it is no joy for left wingers. They are both Christian conservative in outlook. Democracy does not necessarily fit or work well with the traditional method of organisation in Samoan life–the Aiga–or extended family model based on bloodlines and marriage and controlled by Matai appointed by consensus.

HRRP was first installed in different times, and was linked by some to the 1981 Samoan Public Service strike. For supporters of democracy, it would be nice to see the judiciary respected and FAST take up office properly.
Whether either party is really a proxy for China or 5 Eyes would possibly be news to a number of Samoans.

  3. Thanks Chris for this insight. The thought of two Samoas side by side, with competitive ties to America and China is interesting. It will be interesting to watch our government’s response .

  4. More like a tugboat do we have a gun boat? Leaders that have been in that long always have something to hide and no doubt there will be many with a vested interest who have had their heads in the trough. Speaking of trough we still have many here in our own country with their heads in thy trough.

  5. I’m sure Sir Kurt can organise a “telethon” appeal from the Quad members – $100M off the existing debt (currently $200M), with a new $100M loan facility for spending (local infrastructure) unrelated to a new sea port.
