Less than 7 weeks until the 2020 NZ election and the campaign is in full swing. NZ First attacks the Greens, the Greens attack NZ First, National attacks itself, again, ACT does nothing and still gains popularity and Labour are frightened they’ll have to do something if they gain a majority Government.
LABOUR: 60% on Newshub Poll, 53% on TVNZ Poll
Jacinda this week told supporters not to expect much policy as Labour panic with the realisation that as a majority government there are no excuses for the lack of transformative change – Jacinda will wish for Winston wont she?
NATIONAL: 25% on Newshub, 32% on TVNZ Poll
What on earth are they doing in Auckland Central by turning on their own candidate and will National be under 30%?
GREENS: 5.7% on Newshub, 5% on TVNZ Poll
They released a dense 52page manifesto and the electorate responded by them dropping to the 5% threshold – how have they alienated so many voters?
NZFIRST: 2% on Newshub 2% on TVNZ Poll
Spent the last week attacking the Greens but wont that just ensure people party vote Labour and not NZ First?
ACT: 3.3% on Newshub, 5% on TVNZ

I don’t usually bother to watch such things but National’s implosion has got to the hilarious stage and Judith Collins rammed home the lunacy of their policies this morning on Breakfast, when she adamantly adhered to the ‘more roads and bigger roads’ agenda.
Now that is particularly amusing/horrifying when we consider that it was just 24 hours ago that professor James Renwick declared that the last thing we should be doing is building more roads.
Fortunately for Judith, John Campbell was suffering amnesia and did not challenge the idiotic roads and infrastructure narrative Collins espoused. He did grill her on the contradictory aspects of the debt narrative, whereby it is okay for National to increase debt levels but not for Labour to do so, and that the additional debt and roads will free up the congestion.
I have not been to Auckland for quite a while (nor want to) but I understand from what I have read that congestion has largely vanished as a result if the massive changes in the way NZ works (or no longer works). And as the economic meltdown proceeds, there will be even less requirement for roads and other [unspecified] infrastructure.
More instalments of the National comedy show to come, I’m sure, as the global and local financial-economic-environmental meltdown accelerates.
If National are trying to outdo Trump in lunacy and misinformation they are going to have to try a little harder. The latest on Trump is that he has repeatedly referred to the ‘1917 flu pandemic’, which occurred in 1918.
On the matter of the US meltdown, as expected Isaia has hammered the east coast. Not expected were the swarm of twisters, more-or-less unknown in northeast states until yesterday.

Thank you for this entertaining post. But that is about all it is. Damien Grant – sweeping comments like “the Greens are mad” reflects an immaturity on your part, and does us all a disservice as input to the conversation. Martin, I get it that you see politics as a show, and one to be enjoyed in you own inimitable way – but can we please devote some excellence to your contribution to the show?

Gotta keep the masses distracted and amused as the ship goes under. Can’t have them thinking the system has no future. That would be bad for advertising revenue.
