  1. Labour will advance token opposition to TPP then suck it up like the whipped curs they are.

  2. “The fractured opposition to the TPP from within Labour has caused a lot of grief within and laughter without. Little has missed an opportunity to present himself as the fearless leader who has no difficulty understanding right from wrong and sorting out dissent within the ranks.”

And that about sums it up.

Is there time, do you think, for Labour to recover from this before the next election….because I don’t think New Zealand can survive a fourth term of John Key’s administration.

  3. I enjoyed reading this article.

I agree that if Goff and Shearer they had other views re TPPA, the time to discuss, debate and persuade their caucus colleagues was at their internal meetings. But once the majority in the caucus took a particular decision, they had no business to show their dissension in public through the media. Particularly for Shearer as he had not received any dispensation unlike Goff. What he did was unethical, wrong, shameful and a disgrace to go against the collective decision while still remaining in the caucus. The honourable option for him would have been to resign first.

I am an opponent of TPPA in its ‘present’ form and oppose many of its terms as they exists now. I am particularly weary of the fact that, while I understand that there will be a few ‘give and take’ compromise issues in a ‘free trade’ agreement, this is quite an unfair trade agreement. We were kept ignorant of very important issues such as overtly or covertly giving up our sovereignty with regards to making laws if we so choose, for example, to ban land and house ownership for non resident foreigners, as well as retaining the supremacy of parliament to pass laws without a sword of Damocles hanging over the country and the law makers. The rebuttal about being able to put ‘stamp duty’/tax is an ingenuous non-solution as that still takes away our fundamental right as a sovereign country because while it may deter some ordinary non wealthy non residents, wealthy foreigners will STILL be able to buy as much as they want even if we do not want them to do so for whatever reason! There are of course many other dodgy aspects in the deal too.

Our negotiators were rubbish, quite foolish and a disgrace. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that National and their MPs have the guts, conscience, patriotism and even sufficient intellect to demand some changes to the agreement RIGHT NOW. I don’t think they will even try to do so. However, the deal WILL be passed by this Government/cabinet ANYWAY for future governments to carry this dangerous and stupid albatross.

At least Andrew Little the Labour leader has indicated that, instead of throwing the baby with the bath water now, while in power, he and Labour will do their best to have some aspects renegotiated and change the bad parts if possible, as I think some other partner countries will also want to do so. If it can’t be changed then, that is the time to consider leaving and going for individual FTAs. I think that is the most sensible way to proceed for now for Labour and the other opposition parties as things stand now.

      Won’t happen.

NZ has essentially zero bargaining power in trade negotiations.

it’s been this way since the Fourth Labour Govt made us the most open market in the world in terms of goods.

We’ve no import tariffs or barriers of any consequence to relax as an offer to other nations.

In essence, all we can do is beg.

And look at how well that worked out for us over Dairy, the commodity that movement on would have made the greatest difference for us.

Andrew Little is simply dreaming and playing the anti TPP movement for suckers.

  4. We should be negotiating each FTA directly with each country, not some stupid TPPA Agreement being marketed as an FTA by the Natzi’s, this is false advertising and in any other industry you would be up before a Tribunal for misconduct or false advertising?
