Yes, Housing NZ can be quite disgusting when using excuses not to provide homes to those in need. But the assessment of a person’s need is now the responsibility of MSD, who also follow the technical, legal rule set, and who fob many off.

I remember well the huge challenges we faced, when I tried to help someone into a Housing NZ home years ago. He lost his tenancy as the landlord sold the unit he rented. He then ended up in a boarding house with noisy neighbours in other rooms and a cockroach infested kitchen..

Housing NZ then considered him “adequately housed”. Only after involving media did they finally come up with a home for him. This is not a single story, many have faced similar challenges.

It is criminal what this government does, or rather does not do. They rather sell Housing NZ homes to other providers to run homes under social housing, and thus rid themselves of responsibilities and costs.

And for the future prepare for many singles and small families being housed in tiny units stacked on top of each other, in newly built social housing. There will be little privacy, little space, no storage and no garden to use, perhaps also no parking for bicycles or cars.

That is what they call “efficient government”, I suppose.
