David Lynch – 1946-2025
It feels as enormous a loss as David Bowie but for film.
It’s difficult to explain the impact of David to a social media generation.
His art was odd and eery in the way he peeled back the veneer of civility and exposed something very dark at its heart.
I remember when Twin Peaks launched here.
There was an enormous billboard erected in down town Auckland with a body wrapped in a body bag asking ‘Who killed Laura Palmer’?
Hilariously the body bag was stolen which then generated a new round of questions.
His dancing dwarf singing backwards in a dream.
Wow.
David’s unique work and endless universe twists had an enormous impact on the art, culture and psyche of Gen X.
His “Keep your eye on the doughnut, not on the hole” quote just sums up his sparkling optimism despite the dark truths he laid bare for the human gaze.
The passing of a joyful story teller who stunned and confused us with his vision.

The author of that billboard was Roger Killmartin. Marvelous. Outrageous. But not as outrageous as the author David Lynch. What a guy. RIP.
Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet are all-timers. Even his lesser known films like Eraserhead is a near masterpiece. A Straight Story and The Elephant Man proved he could make conventional films every bit as compelling as his weirder stuff. RIP.
