Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has tried his hand at digger driving and he reckons those on the Jobseeker benefit should too.
Defending new sanctions he said were designed to shift people off Jobseeker Support into employment, Luxon said there were plenty of jobs in horticulture and a shortage of digger drivers in New Zealand.
“We need massive amounts of digger drivers. They’re cool jobs,” Luxon told Newstalk ZB, defending newly introduced sanctions to be applied to those on the Jobseeker benefit who fail to meet their obligations.
Jobs advertised on New Zealand employment sites such as Seek and Trade Me showed a demand for digger operators but most required at least a class two qualification.
…as his own Treasury forecasts a. new unemployment peak of 5.4%, National are throwing 50 000 off welfare to afford $2.9b tax loop hole for the richest landlords and while the PM hasn’t spoken to any beneficiaries about the new draconian sanctions, he’s advising them to be digger drivers.

There is one job per 30 applications in Northland – where are people supposed to get these jobs?
There are 200 digger jobs on Trade Me at the moment, what happens when those 200 jobs go?
We are punishing the poor to afford tax cuts for the rich.

Plenty of work for skilled machine operators in Australia, mining pays well too.

There will be no digger jobs soon as these idiots have closed down nearly every contruction site in the country .My brother in law is digger driver having spent the last 6 years on the road to warkworth he now has no work .By the time this lot get the warkworth to Te Hana section under way he will be pushing up daisies.

Targeting the poor has the least blowback for this government. If they targeted more wealthy constituents they would face much more resistance (backed with lobbyists and funding). Picking on the poor and disenfranchised is easy (due to minimal resistance) also due to making the rest of us feel better about not being caught in this portion of the populace.
The minimal resistance is mainly due to the level of alienation and apathy that has developed in this part of the population as they suffer from a form of group depression where just getting by day-to-day is super hard and any thought of actually doing something to drag themselves out of their dire situation is just too hard – this include voting and making better lifestyle ‘choices’.
I strongly believe that the concept of ‘choice’ is really only for those who have something to loose – which those that Luxon called ‘bottom feeders’ have none in reality. These asshole sanctions just add to their misery.
Labour likes to kick those who vote for them, National doesn’t. Who’s in Government?

I am disappointed in some of these comments.
I think Christopher Luxon is an excellent digger operator and should take it up fulltime.
He will thus be more useful to the nation as whole than in his present occupation of arselicker to corporations and warmongers.
Imagine just that current increase of those 35000 unemployed all across the country on diggers.
And then count the hidden unemployed numbers that make the Stats a lie, those who lost jobs but don’t receive a benefit because their partners work, the mind boggles at all those digger drivers !
