Grace Millane murder accused pleads not guilty, keeps name supression
The man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane has appeared in court for a second time – and pleaded not guilty.
His name remains suppressed until at least the end of the month.
The danger of politicising the death of Grace Millane as an example of toxic masculinity rape culture is if this death was something else.
Many already know who the accused is and the lynch mob comments on social media do no one any good.
The truth is that all we know is that an innocent young woman has tragically died and a young man has been arrested for that death. We don’t know the details of what actually happened, and if a very different circumstance emerges to the one that has been advanced of violent men who abuse women, the cultural backlash could make things a lot worse.
Our rush to judge could be making meaningful cultural change a lot more difficult.
It’s ironic, taking back all the things the Third World has and turning off the internet. Hopefully mass communication, police, courts and laws aren’t too vital.
