  1. Mourn the departure of Austin Mitchell MP, and mourn that he ever left New Zealand. Some of us remember him from OU, more remember him as a fearless television commentator back in the days when the New Zealand media valued having contributors with working brain cells. By chance, an old friend, son of the atheist Bishop of Grimsby in his UK constituency, knew Mitchell and saw him as the sort of politician who we only dream of having in contemporary New Zealand, and very much need. Mitchell was pretty ok for a hetero white man – and a Pom. Witty too – lucky to escape the anti-free speech dark clouds looming on our depressing horizon.
