I think it is time to tune up the effort to get Maori boys and girls on the right track early. The IPCA (Independent Police Conduct Authority) is no doubt right in its judgment based on precedent and on present settings, but this Maori policeman was bringing some firmness and insistence of responsibility for action and collaboration with family wishes to young and heedless Maori. His methods should be considered by another joint Maori and Police authority group in discussion with him and a template set up for future interventions looking to uplift youngsters from poor choices and reduce offending rates noticeably within five years.
