He was a cheeky, blonde-haired boy whose family fondly nicknamed him “Bomber”.
But some quality time playing at home on Friday afternoon turned to tragedy for the Hergenhan family when 3-year-old Fletcher ran out onto the road and was killed by a passing pantech truck.
Fletcher “Bomber” Hergenhan died in front of his father, Carl, outside their home in New South Wales, Australia, just before 4pm.
The road where Fletcher was killed. Residents have complained about the 70kmh speed limit.
His death has prompted an outpouring of support from the Lake Macquarie community and a GoFundMe page has been set up to raise $10,000 for funeral costs.
“This beautiful and cheeky blonde-haired little boy brought joy and love to the hearts of hundreds of people,” the GoFundMe page says.
“A bright ray of sunshine, always happy, Bomber had a smile to light up the world.”
A family friend posted online that Fletcher had run out to say hi to his dad, a welder, who had arrived home from work.
“This was unimaginable,” the friend posted. “This young boy had so much life and lived more than most.”
Those who were on the scene said it appeared to be a tragic accident with no-one at fault.
The truck driver, a tradesman for The Plumbing and Electrical Doctor, was uninjured but devastated, his boss said on Saturday.
