Is this a case of money laundering on a grand scale?
We live on the Hibiscus Coast, north Auckland. My husband heard on the local Radio Live station yesterday (Fri 15 April), that a Russian consortium is in the process of buying out virtually the small Waiwera community, including the local restaurant, to establish a luxury hotel and apartments in the area, to accommodate overseas visitors. It is said quite a bit of land transfer could be involved.
If this is the case, how is this allowed to happen, where one overseas domiciled entity is able to do this?
Is this happening in other communities in NZ?
And more to the point, has there been consultation with the local community involved here?
We have heard local Waiwera residents are pretty unhappy at this news and who can blame them, considering that a good majority have lived there most of their lives and such a buy out will change the face of the little community!
The same Russian consortium already owns a 150 year + well known recreation facility in the area, which has served Aucklanders and visitors well over the years. It is said this could be demolished. But that point hasn’t been fully established yet.
This definitely isn’t progress for the community, or NZ!
Not sure if anyone else has information about this issue or similar instances, but if there are more details, I think they should be shared to keep people informed.
To us this seems like it could well be money laundering on a grand scale, where it’s possible dirty money is shifted out of a foreign country and put into a tax haven (in this case NZ) to be cleaned, thereby avoiding paying tax in either country!
Is this what the Panama papers are about?
Sorry to be so long winded, but I do feel this is too important an issue to be ignored and it does need some investigation. If it is happening, it should be out there, informing Kiwis of just what is going on in their country!
Sadly @ Mary A – New Zealand seems to be a ‘free for all’ at the moment – probably thanks to our current ( we don’t give a **** about New Zealanders ) Govenment. There are very little protections in place to save the New Zealand way of life, community and environment. The place is literally being trashed.
Hi Kim Dandy –
Perhaps this is our “cusp of something special!” NZ being used and abused to satisfy the corrupt!
Number 1 son Max Key going along for the ride with Papa J to China! Isn’t this what despots do, take their “intended next in line to the throne” with them when visiting foreign heads of state overseas, to introduce them to the “future”!
