Is our government going to magic up some houses for those evacuated from Afghanistan because if this does happen there is going to be a lot of very disgruntled angry NZers. And I don’t blame people being angry many have been stuck in crap motels and waiting for years for a decent place to live.
Covid is pa. You may well be right about some New Zealanders being disgruntled. However, if we offer refuge to the Afghans who helped us over there, there is a very good chance that members of their own community already here, and folk from the New Zealand Muslim community, will help them out, just as right now, it is the Samoan community in South Auckland, which is providing food for hungry lockdowned poor Pacifica people, not the government.
Times of crises can bring out the goodness in people, and new New Zealanders who have lived hellish lives themselves are less likely to turn their backs on traumatised others – and govt will quite likely be counting on them, and church groups and NGO’s to help these tragic people, just like they always do. Govt will also want to do a bit of virtue signalling to the UNO anyway.
