  1. Frequent in our future! Fire travels fast like that old saying of Mark Twain’s.

14 Māe 2018 — Mark Twain is said to have remarked that a lie can travel around the world and back while the truth is still lacing up its boots.

And that’s no lie, and future fires will continue to travel fast and devastate us is no lie! What can we do to limit these? We can’t control strong winds, what else? We have legal controls that are notified. We also have numbskulls and those who get on with the job blindly.

…Fire and Emergency (FENZ) was alerted to the out-of-control burnoff near Tokarahi at around midday on Friday.
Strong winds fanned the blaze overnight. It has so far burned through approximately 400 hectares of farmland, tussock and scrub.
FENZ incident controller Bobby Lamont said the fire was not contained or controlled.
Lamont said much of the fire-ground was not easily accessible for vehicles, and they were having to airlift firefighters in.
“Winds are forecast to gust up to 100km/h here today. We anticipate we’ll be at this fire for some days.”…

Do we have official firewatchers? Retired local people? They would get a stipend or something, vehicle allowance, be human meerkats? Watch, enjoy, learn from drongos!

    1. Subtitled – ‘Little Red/Blue Robbing Hood’! (Makes customers and other people go purple in the face.)

  2. …”Our only choice is whether we manage our way down to a much simpler life and much, much less consumption, or we have Armageddon and we end up there anyway. I personally think that I’d much rather manage our way down…

“I’m talking about this kind of stuff all the time and I get labelled ‘Dr Doom’. I was at a public meeting just the other day and I thought, you know, actually business as usual – if we carry on doing what we’re doing – that’s doom.”
Guess. And this is a big thank you to all those good academics who know the stuff that is important and get ignored or attacked verbally.
