What’s going on at Te Motu Kairangi?

Ian Cassels’ Wellington Company and Taranaki Whānui need to throw a much clearer light on their development plans for the Miramar Peninsula/Te Motu Kairangi, as reported in a front-page DomPost article, beyond PR puffery. At present, the waters are decidedly murky…
Who is behind all this? The impression has been conveyed that both the Shelly Bay and Mt Crawford developments are joint ventures of the Wellington Company and Taranaki Whānui. Is that actually the case – or an example of intentional misinformation?
These are the facts.
Taranaki Whānui bought the land at Shelly Bay in a Treaty settlement, then several years later sold it to the Wellington Company, making a loss of $3 million in the process. Thus, they are not joint owners – the Wellington Company is totally in control of the development at Shelly Bay.
The sale by Taranaki Whānui was opposed by a majority of iwi members. Mau Whenua, an iwi group, occupied the land at Shelly Bay in protest for over a year and a half. A case challenging the legality of the sale awaits a decision at the Māori Land Court. But the fact remains: the sale happened, or so we’ve been led to believe.
One gets a feeling that Maori iwi members are being taken to the cleaners. It gives me a bad feeling about other things that are being suggested throughout NZ.
