  1. The situation in the East that Minto brings up are very real but unfortunately it goes way back before the earthquakes. I endorse his thinking on many issues but I am at odds with his push for council to be involved in social housing and not selling assets. The government should be the sole provider of social housing as those that meet the criteria to warrant this assistance often need help in other areas and there is no point in doubling up The council have been shown to do a poor job of looking after the needy.

Funny, I was going to say a similar thing. I lived in various parts of the East for a total of 4 years, in two separate bursts, in the late 90s and early 2000s. It was always, as the t-shirts say of Newtown, “a bit shit”. This is partly the result of a politics of resisting gentrification, which I understand and support, but also acknowledge that it has contributed to a lack of enthusiasm for investing in development in the area. But none of this changes the fact that the council has a responsibility to repair the public infrastructure in all parts of the city, not just the leafy suburbs, and as John points out, it clearly has the money to do and is mismanaging it.

Given how badly central government has managed public housing over the last few decades, regardless of the party in power, I’d argue exactly the opposite. Decentralize all responsibility and funding for social housing to local councils who are in a better position to identify and respond to the needs of their communities and to be held accountable by them. While we’re at it, abolish Housing NZ and reconstitute a Ministry of Housing that provides governments with policy advice and reports based on its oversight of council-run public housing, just as the Ministry of Health does with the DHBs.

  2. I like Lianne Dalziel but I have met Minto and I like his philosophy and his guts so he’ll probably get my vote.Otherwise it’s People’s Choice.

  3. Agreed. If the central government is failing to provide housing then lets roll at a local level.

  4. Christchurch City Council have plenty of money to dig up perfectly good footpaths, in Beckenham ,and relay perfectly good footpaths in their place . At the same time ignoring a 13 year old water leak on the corner if Birdwood and Corson Aves. Save us from this madness !
