I filed my Statement of Claim re double bunking , staff to inmate ratio , illegal Waikeria prison rules etc . at the Hamilton High Court on 29 June . Crown Law has just asked for an extra month to prepare their Statement of Defence .
I’ve found officers who start off treating inmates with a modicum of respect have the least trouble with them, and it helps with the inmates’ rehabilitation.
Someone “in the know” says fights are going on at Ngawha Prison in cells where prisoners double bunked. One inmate had his nose broken, 4-5 teeth chipped, beaten about the head, concussed and upgraded from Low-Medium security to HighSecurity at Mt Eden.

Corrections is dealing with the muster crisis by double bunking in cells that were not designed to hold more than one prisoner. They have not done this to date because they had legal advice and know that putting two prisoners in cell so small they barely have room for one is a recipe for disaster and may very well contravene section 23 (5) of the Bill of Rights Act which mandates prisoners be treated humanely and with respect for their dignity.
I have now had time to read the Inspectorate report about Auckland Prison in detail, dated June 2017.
The first thing that caught my eye was the “inspection team” was headed by Trevor Riddle.
If Corrections NZ spent as much time and energy looking after prisoners welfare as they do trying to gag me and punish me for holding them to account, we wouldn’t need to do this in the first place.
