An astounding claim late this week from Kim Dotcom that appeared on a news blog that few will have heard of has been ignored by the mainstream corporate media in New Zealand. The claim is that 2 terabytes of information has been hacked or ‘leaked’ from the National Party and that it will appear in the 2017 election.
When New Zealand amended the Security Intelligence Service (SIS) Act in 1996, it was the first significant change in almost 20 years. The 20 years since that amendment have seen a constant stream of law changes extending the powers of the country’s spies. The Intelligence and Security Bill currently before Parliament is the latest of these. In this series of three articles, I outline why I think this Bill represents the most disturbing attack to date on the rights and freedoms of New Zealanders.
I recommend the Select Committee not proceed with this Bill in its present form. Overall it puts New Zealanders in a worse situation than in already existing legislation, in relation to both their personal privacy and their right to untrammeled freedom of expression.
As more and more NZers suddenly wake up to this appalling legislation and its ramifications – people are going to be outraged.
Outraged that they didn’t know this bloody thing was even happening.
Outraged at the full scale assault on our democracy that it represents.
And outraged that it’s been allowed to progress this far with bugger all scrutiny.
