World breaks 1,400 temperature records in a week as heat waves sweep globe
This week, more than 1,000 temperature records broke around the world, many of them shattered by extreme heat. Hundreds have perished while making the Hajj pilgrimage to Islam’s holiest site, Mecca, while some 100 million people are under a heat advisory in the United States. The total number of heat-related deaths isn’t yet clear, but at least hundreds have died in an unseasonably early heat wave; in India, which has seen some of the most extreme temperatures, at least 100 people have died in the last three monthsdue to heat.
The heatwaves are “the fingerprint of climate change,” experts said, and are a glimpse of what’s to come as human-induced climate change continues to amplify extreme weather. “It should be obvious that dangerous climate change is already upon us,” a climate scientist told The Washington Post. “People will die because of global warming on this very day.”

Responding to the grounding of the Aratere over the weekend, the Government has signalled it will buy new replacement ferries, but only enough to replace existing freight capacity.
That would effectively limit Aotearoa-NZ’s ability to handle any growth in population or the need to reduce emissions by shifting freight from road to rail over the next 50 years.
However, the National-ACT-NZ First Government has not signalled at the same time that it is conciously planning for a flat population or an emissions profile that breaches our Paris Agreements, and therefore the recently-signed UK and EU free trade agreements.
…this climate denying Government is not even pretending to keep its obligations.
The simple truth is we are fucked and catastrophic climate change is here and it will only get far far far worse despite the right wing denial.
That means we have to start facing up to a very different type of world and NZs role in that world as a life boat.

Give or take a hundred or so, there’s about half a million scientists involved in monitoring and reporting on climate change and it’s effects, and the likely, probable scenarios five years out, ten years out and twenty years out.
Of that half a million, 99.997% all agree that extreme climate change has arrived, with the average mean temperature having risen two degrees since the early 1800s. The 0.003% are bought and paid for by the oil, coal, forestry and farming industries, and they use skewed data, obscure inconsistencies and outright lies to create stories about dissension where none exist, that are picked up and falsely trumpeted by the right wing media.
Anyone doubting the veracity of climate change – extreme climate change – that is here to stay for at least the next 250 years, need only watch Sir David Attenborough “Climate Change: The Facts” and “Climate Change: Survival “.
There’s no escaping it; even our own NIWA research confirms it: NZ average mean temperature is 1.5 degrees higher than when records began. And the conclusion is inescapable – human industrial and farming activities have caused it.
We also know what the effects will be with a fair degree of certainty. Droughts, floods, fires, super-storms, and sea level rise. All NZ coastal cities will need huge infrastructure replacement and whole suburbs will need relocation. The cost will exceed the whole current GDP of the country. No insurance company will cover homes or businesses in certain areas. Current farming practices will either change radically or fail completely, as local climates make existing dairying/cropping etc unviable. All this is inevitable and unstoppable if that mean temperature increases to 3 degrees above the 1800 mean.
We have until about 2030 to halt that rise. After that, civilization as we know it, collapses under the financial pressure of remedial costs.
The conclusion is sobering. We might be the last generation of humanity on this planet. Life will go on, just without humans. Given the current stranglehold of greed, pride, laziness on the wealthy and the decision makers, maybe that’s not a bad thing; just a bit tough on the rest of us.
If this comes to pass, I expect the current youngest generation, under 5 and the unborn yet, will make a point of visiting the graves of their ancestors who were shown to be climate change deniers, dig them up, and cast their corpses into the sea. I’ll be with them in spirit.
You do know that nations that have made climate commitments have to pay for not meeting them, essentially paying other countries to offset the excess pollution.
So while we aren’t meeting our commitments directly, we are paying for the harm to the climate to be offset.
Therefore what is your concern re the climate?
