  1. The National party comedy show continues while the world increasingly turns to shit -environmentally economically, financially, socially and politically- as a consequence of the actions (or inaction) of politicians.

‘From the side of real climate science the answer was easy. We have a high level of scientific understanding regarding the radiative forcing imposed by CO2. We know human activity is causing atmospheric concentrations to rise primarily through the burning of fossil fuels. It wasn’t a stretch to believe humans would continue to burn fossil fuels for another decade and enough forcing would be imposed on the climate system to cause another decade of warming.

It’s really not that complicated. More CO2 = increased forcing = a warmer planet.’

‘The great hope for drug treatments against Covid-19 – the monoclonal antibodies – are failing against variants of the virus, such as those that have emerged in South Africa and Brazil, scientists have found.

There have been high expectations of the drugs. One, made by Regeneron in the United States, was given to Donald Trump and may have played a part in his recovery. It is being trialled in hospital patients in the UK.

But to the dismay of those who work on therapies against the disease, all three leading contenders – Regeneron’s, and drugs from Eli Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline – fail against one or more of the variants.’

‘Average New Zealand housing values rose by $554 a day during January, topping $800,000 for the first time’

‘A Moscow court is mulling whether to extend opposition activist and politician Alexei Navalny’s current 30-day jail sentence after he returned from Berlin last month where he recovered from an alleged nerve agent poisoning which he’s blamed on Russian intelligence on orders from Putin. He could reportedly be handed a stiff three-and-a-half year prison sentence related to a 2014 embezzlement case and subsequent probation violation, which he has said is “politically motivated”.

Russia’s foreign ministry is now angered at the spectacle during Tuesday’s court proceedings which saw a large number of Western diplomats crowd the courtroom.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that while they are free to attend public trials, the fact that there were some 20 of them from countries including the United States, Bulgaria, Poland, Latvia, Austria, and Switzerland, shows there’s an attempt to meddle in Russia’s internal legal affairs.’

Perhaps politicians would have more credibility if they were to become informed about what is happening in the world and focus on sorting out the mess they and their comrades have created in their own backyards. That applies as much to Labour and the Greens as to National. After all, we have reached the ‘crash and burn stage’ on practically all fronts, with a lot more ‘crashing and burning’ to come.

I guess the politicians prefer to let ‘the market’ run the show, whatever the consequences. Which begs the question: why are they there at all? Is it only about self-enrichment?

  2. How are National Dirty ? Let me count the ways…. Collins’s outing of I L-G’s extra-marital dalliance, with brutal disregard for the impact on an innocent spouse and children was a pretty gutter sort of tactic … another apparently sexting pix of his penis was more pathetic schoolboy exhibitionism, while a Dunedin laddie emblazing a woman’s face on a lavatory seat was five year old level humour. Now some sort of tryst in a quarantine facility was a diversionary tactic engineered by the Labour Party ? I don’t think so. I think that these people need to stop thinking beneath the belt and braces, and start using their big heads, even if learning to trust each other may be an even more Herculean task than expecting the voters to accept that their adolescent behaviour is caused by the Labour Party. Dumb as they come – and go.

    1. @Snow White – perfect. Could I add that as long as the National Party supports the Trump doctrine of brainwashing the electorate into believing bizarre conspiracy theories, and trumped up allegations (excuse the pun) it will never succeed.

The world has quickly moved on from Trump and his Trumpty Numpty supporters and adherents so National’s Trumpesque conduct should see them wallowing in the mire for quite a while yet.

  3. National needs to realize its past appeal to New Zealand voters was centered on the fact that it was not a socialist party.
In the 1980s Labour took that appeal away from them by becoming anti-socialist.
National next tried the appeal of a smirking, hair pulling millionaire whose success I can only put to mass hypnosis.
But then Labour responded by remaining firmly non-socialist and taking on us on an adventure with infectiously cheerful Jacinda. Jacinda and Labour scraped home with Winston’s help because National shat in their own nest by offending the great grumpy one. THEN – magic- came a time of great crisis and Jacinda was able to project kindness, empathy, compassion, optimism, humour – while keeping the poor poor and making the rich more wealthy( non-socialism).
So what must National do to regain power?
EUREKA- try SOCIALISM. Sell it to voters by showing how it reduces poverty, improves people’s health, reduces crime, offers good educational outcomes to all society and creates a more equal society( like the one I grew up in as a baby boomer. Keith Holyoake and National in charge for most of that time.).
Come on National – if Labour can manage a complete turn around so can you! I look to you for the change.

  4. The more whacko National is the better! Mr Luxon’s extreme right/evangelical religious affiliation, as pointed out by none other than TDB contributor Chris Trotter, will be interesting if he does become leader before next election, or forbid, COVID outbreak.

2023 is the year Labour will likely have to eat humble pie, because there will be a shift to Green/Māori, particularly if MP stays on its current staunch line. The Labour Caucus is beyond help at the moment in terms of moving one millimetre from defending neo liberal hegemony–at the expense of the NZ working class.

So, I guess it is keep the pressure on the Greens to go left economically on matters like state house/apartment builds, legalise Cannabis, and Basic Income, so the boomer replacement gens obviously have something to vote for.
