National’s Hamilton East candidate Ryan Hamilton says no red flags were raised by the party regarding his historical comments opposing water fluoridation and Covid-19 vaccine mandates.
Hamilton told the Herald his opposition to using fluoride, which included saying it was pointless because “most lower socio economics fill their tap water with Raro”, was not raised during the candidate selection process.
His views on the approach to Covid-19, which included opposing restricting unvaccinated people from council buildings and claiming coroner reporting was seemingly used to “inflate death numbers for the propaganda machine” were addressed but no one from the party was concerned, Hamilton claimed.
Look, Ryan Hamilton is a classist bigot with some reactionary mandate and fluoride beliefs, but that just makes him your usual run of the mill Tory arsehole.
Ryan has every right to hold wrong opinions, just as Deborah Rhodes has every right to hold the wrong opinion on HPV vaccines, where the demarcation line between holding stupid positions and dangerous conspiracy is fraught, my feel is that it comes down to being wrong and being a fantasist.
Ryan is a dickhead and he’s wrong, Deborah is wrong too, but candidates in ACT and NZ First go well beyond just being wrong in that they invent a fantasy reality where nano robots are in the vaccine, a global shadowy child abusing cabal are working with the pharmaceutical industry and getting vaccinated is akin to concentration camps.
Ryan Hamilton and Deborah Rhodes being wrong is a story, but the extremism in ACT and NZ First make these two seem reasonable, besides, the far bigger story is how NZs richest man is donating $700k to ACT and National!

I would have more respect if these candidates had stuck to their opinions and just say we agree to disagree on this matter but let’s look at what we agree on.
Many on this platform have strong opinions about the correct path to take on one subject and clash but then agree on others .That is what makes life interesting.
