Not sure what you mean here. Women and children are overrepresented in the poverty stats. Child poverty is chronic in NZ. Older female poverty is growing here and round the world. Policies need to be rethought

  1. Have you noticed no women are complaining about their lack of representation in logging, roofing, construction, fishing, garbage collection, steelwork, mining, truck driving, farming & plumbing?

  2. You squabbling brats do realise this is a left wing blog dontcha?
Try Whaleoil if you really believe that nonsense.

  3. I agree with your post but also wish that people would stop using the word ‘gender’ as a euphemism for sex. Women are a sex, not a gender, and the inequality they face is due to their sex, ie the fact they’re female. Equality between genders is worthy in and of itself, ie femininity shouldn’t be valued less than masculinity, but when it comes to women’s experiences, numbers in Parliament etc we’re talking equality of the sexes.

  4. I will start by saying that I concur with the thrust of this article, and agree with the premise, but there is one point that I think needs clarification.. as follows
“For example, we think we have world leading social policy, a no-fault ACC scheme that many other countries would love to have”. That was what we used to have before Keys tories utterly wrecked it.. I can speak, as I was a victim of what they did to a really good system… Had some scaffolding fall out from underneath me on Aucklands North shore.. Firstly, my “employer stopped paying me the second my body hit the ground.. Then I had the hospital obsessing about my neck being possibly broken, while totally overlooking the fact that my ribcage had changed shape(still sticks out years later).. Followed by the ACC giving me less money than it cost me for rent, due to some “new” rules that had been brought in by those “responsible tories” which forced me to go back to work weeks before it was safe for me to.. (couldn’t pick up anything over 5kg, and struggled with balance and cognition). The only people who would believe that the ACC system we have is anything like a proper compensation scheme anymore are those who either haven’t ever had to avail themselves of it, and those who would gleefully vote for Key again if his handlers ever decide they needed his help again, so he took back the leadership he gave away so casually… The ACC that John Key set up would kill more people than it could ever possibly help… At this point, I have no idea whether it has been reset, or not, but I would guess not much at best…
