Consider the Right wing approach to the Energy Crisis announced last week vs the Left wing solution.
The Government is sending a strongly worded letter to the Industry and have promised an LNG terminal which will be years away.
THAT’S IT!
Parents are working out if they can afford to turn on the heater and companies are folding because of the
REMEMBER – it was the privatisation agenda of our power assets that have created this problem, their shareholders don’t give a fuck about sustainable power, they only care about their next quarter.
Shareholder’s be like, ‘fuck you pay me’.
National’s energy plan will do nothing to stem job losses, or manage the cost of living for New Zealanders, that’s not just from the NZCTU, but it’s also being said by Simon Bridges who is hardly a card carrying member of the Communist Party!
Now consider the Left’s electricity solution and their criticism of the Government’s response…
National are tackling non-existent problems such as financing investment, while dodging the real issues, such as delivering new generation and excessive dividend distribution!
Jobs are being lost on a weekly basis across New Zealand and high electricity prices are contributing to those losses. Households faced an average 11.4% increase in electricity prices. Yet the best thing that the Government can do is write a sternly worded letter to the Generators.
“This Government has failed to address the challenges inherent in our current electricity market. The NZCTU believes that electricity is a public utility, rather than a source of profit. Even the Government’s own press release states that the market has failed to invest, and we are now paying the price. The weak package put forward by Ministers today shows how much better a publicly owned electricity system, as proposed by the NZCTU, would be for the future of New Zealand.”
…bottom line is National’s plan will not lower peoples power bills or make it cheaper for Business!
All this is designed to look like National are doing something when they aren’t!
This isn’t a Government serious about solving problems, it is only serious about looking like they are solving problems.
The Left are offering genuine solutions to our broken electricity market, the Right are pretending to do something.

We need to build renewables, which are coming down in price and up in reliability as design (as well as production) shifts from incompetent America to competent China.
And in the interim, we should be importing cheap Russian oil and gas to keep our industry going, rather than funding American warmongers.

Pricing is important but the backdrop to the the electricity crisis is the broader issues of what resources are to be used to generate energy and how that energy will be shared/distributed and consumed. Someone on the top pay scale will need to step up pretty soon but don’t expect vested interests to one of them. Seems a monumental task irrespective of govt given the deep hole we’ve dug.
