  1. This is a very contentious and difficult issue. While we do need some highly skilled people to come here to help our economy we should be investing in our own first and foremost. We have known where these gaps are for sometime but we continue to fill critical positions right across the board with foreigners. When will we learn and when and how will we act?

    1. Free education from toddlers through tertiary for a start.
Polytechnics leading apprenticeship training along with cadetships in all Govt Depts aqlong with a govt guaranteed superannuation saving scheme and the money invested in the Govt coffers and NZ.

Nothing new here just things that work.
Cuba has an excess of Doctors and nurses which they export to needy locations globally.
NZ has to import nurses and Doctors to keep the health system running.

The difference is that Cuba provided free education and training while NZ follows a neoliberal model where trainees pay.

  2. I am a bit annoyed with some of the so called NZers coming back now when Winstone asked them to come back now and they didn’t listen. They are costing us far too much money and that is money we don’t have. Some may have genuine reasons but not all.

  5. Responsible Campers Association (RCAi) is pleased to lead the way and educate all travelers about not crapping in the bush or side of the road. It was our report published early 2018 that lead to the current education by Councils and DOC etc. Our accreditation program puts the emphasis on the person – not the mode of camping, in so doing is inclusive and available to all. We are solutions based on real evidence, not hearsay or moaning NIMBY’s. RCAi currently has a review of the self containment standard under way – as while that has failed to provide real solutions, it has also prevented other consideration of solutions.

  6. Only those of the ‘diaspora’ who have no passport other than NZ should be allowed back. Those with another passport need to stay in the country of that passport, indefinitely.

We need to have the protection of those of us who are in NZ — and who coped with the lockdown — as the prime concern. The drawbridge must go up, with the exception as noted above.
