  1. Thanks for that Curwen, one of your best, imffho. And a reminder of two things we all need to bear in mind.

Voters are not very biddable, even by ‘their own’ parties. See the number of Nats who ‘disobey’ their leaders and electorate-vote for the Nat candidate in Epsom and Ohariu.

There is a huge gap in our understanding of the split vote phenomenon, which has a huge impact on outcomes.

  2. I think there is now a cynicism of these types who come on promising everything and delivering nothing,… these politicians spouting off all the correct words, preying on peoples ‘doing it hard’.

Dunne was one such. We had come through an era when people were furious at the ‘rogernomic ‘reforms. Then Dunne comes preaching his ‘family values’ with his Kiwi drawl and bow tie. People thought they had found a new defender against neo liberalism. They were wrong.

Dunne was just another political opportunist who took advantage of peoples misery. This country’s parliament is full of them.

As a consequence we’ve had 33 years of neo liberalism. And this is how politicians earn their well deserved reputation of not being trustable. This is how the neo liberal status quo is maintained. By weak , self interested politicians like Peter Dunne. They deserve no accolades , no feelings or sentiments of an ‘ end of an era’ complete with misty fading memory’s,… just the stark reminder to always take 90% of what they say with a grain of salt and believe things when you see them. And to always hold them to account.

The last three decades have been full of neo liberal enablers and Peter Dunne was just one more of them. And because of his succoring to larger party’s adhering to that ideology he is the classic political self serving opportunist . A mere , easily seen-through sell out.

He will not be missed at all.

    1. Too true @WK, and served upped with lashings of unctuous sanctimony and his acutely uncommon common sense.

      1. Having not been living in NZ for two decades your recital of Dunn’s political gymnastics of recent times was most interesting.

In short Dunne, the member for Dunne. In the end doing whatever was needed to keep the Quuens shilling arriving and a ministerial warrant.

And never mind the electorate voters who supported him…..rather than stand again he realises thereis 55 to 45 chance of Labour winning his seat so decamps mid-election.

As they say here in Aussie :” you would not cross the road to piss on the chap if he was on fire….”.

  3. The free seat scam – bolstering their party vote allocation with a bonus electorate seat – has ended in Ohariu.
Next step, remove MMP with its anomalies and install STV.

    1. Yep Louis, that’s Peter Dunne alright! Reminds me of something from a 19th century rogues gallery you would have seen pinned to the wall at the local constabulary, with a larger than life message under it … “WANTED. THIS MAN IS DANGEROUS. DO NOT APPROACH”!

  4. Pleased he’s gone,he’s been a bit of a bump in the road for some time.
Lange said if Peter’s biography was written he would be omitted as being too boring,a very perceptive man David.
I see he’s suggested the National candidate is the man to replace him, can’t be to many folk homeless down that way.
Claims to fame , eccentric, out of touch, relevant and a National party pasty.
    Please Peter don’t write a memoir .
