The Corrections Department is reviewing its criteria for double-bunking in cells after a repeat sex offender was found guilty of raping three of his cellmates.
…what a wee charmer he is, and how lovely for our prison system to lock the vulnerable up with sex convicts to be raped. What a jolly little system we have here in NZ.
The ingredients to how we got here are pretty simple. Politicians who manipulate the frightened and the angry mixed with a mainstream media who do all they can to dehumanise and magnify crime and criminals for ratings and you get counter productive spiteful social policy that only causes more damage.
We are simply too immature a culture to be able to discuss these issues with depth.

It would seem to be an accepted part of the punishment and rehabilitation regimen Prison rape is a well known crime that has been a bit of a societal joke and possibly even employed as an additional deterrent,especially for child sex offenders.
New Zealand prisons are in no way a place where rehabilitation is a goal and rape is accepted as the norm.
I’m sure those on the far right (e.g. Mike Hosking and Greg O’Connor) will see this as richly deserved bonus punishment and a great deterrent for those “choosing” to commit crimes. “Don’t want to be raped? Don’t do crime!”. The vast majority of the electorate will nod their heads in agreement, which is why I’m guessing Labour recruited Greg “all cops must be armed” O’Connor.
