  1. An interesting contribution, I must say. Yes, observing my human fellows all over the globe, not just in NZ Inc, I observe we are not so much progressing, we are regressing, back towards the mind and body of chimpanzees and bonobos.

Social media tends to only reinforce what people think and feel already, as social animals like us tend to join ‘friends’ and groups that are like-minded, and shy from interacting with others having different ideas and feelings.

    The same happens on blogs.

This means there are limited learning opportunities, we have more means to chatter and exchange info, but the quality of that does not really improve, it is just more of the usual, sometimes escalating into the idiotic and insane (see Trump et al).

I share the concerns about Jacinda the Mother of the Nation to be. Women’s Weekly and MSM will be all over her, and few will discuss politics and changes that are really needed.

No wonder the Royals have got away with all their indulgences and idiocy for so long, there are too many sycophants and suckers out there, who fall for appearance, rather than substance.

When will we have another age of enlightenment, I ask, will we ever have one again, if there ever was one? Or is such just a privilege of a few that may have the ability and environmental resources to enjoy ‘enlightenment’ of sorts?

    1. One thing I noticed about traveling Japan and China in particular is the media is very narrow. So there’s no CNN, FOX news, BBC, Al Jazeera and so on unless you get the suit with the TV package as complementary. So western media is treated as a luxury item in these countries. People have been interested in MSM for many years but my own interests is in exploring some aspects of higher education and politics and ultimately human nature which should show up in every domain not just the west. MSM happens to be one of a few domains were you can study what the establishment capacity is because it’s unique in core elite establishment capacities and can achieve results that go beyond superficial understandings. In most things it’s very hard to read the mind of an establishment ideologue like a Jeff Bezos (CEO Amazon) or the Queen of England but this is one area where you can.

At the core of MSM is a creative aspect to do what you and I are doing by expressing our thoughts with in constraints but with out limits, in novel ways but some how a fundamental way of nature which is a core enlightenment philosophy for example. And similar aspect of societies capacity for generative grammar but it must be some set of principals that we are capable of applying in Noel situations with out limits. And I believe these principles have to be apart of our nature because there is now way that I’m aware of that can be acquired, particularly by Asians for example.

Certainly if you’re acting as a kind of moral agent then you’re chasing things that are good for people that some how bring out and amplify possibilities for there fundamental nature to expresses itself. And this is pretty abstract especially when dealing with fundamental human nature and improving on it.

  2. It is clear that the lethargy will continue until we come to a crisis that will force people to come to grips with fundamental questions such as an allocation of wealth that is equitable and that the finite resources of the planet can sustain.Throughout the Western World inequality is growing. When it reaches critical mass there will be an inexorable movement towards a solution. The solution of the right in its essence is likely to be the culling of the poor. The solution of the left will be democratic socialism. Survey the U.S. and you will realise that a bare knuckle struggle is ahead. Prepare yourself!!!

    1. “When it reaches critical mass there will be an inexorable movement towards a solution. The solution of the right in its essence is likely to be the culling of the poor. The solution of the left will be democratic socialism.”

Well, with the very gradual change to the worse, and the massive ignorance that abounds, people rather ‘adjusting’ and fighting each other, than joining forces, I cannot see any real hope at the horizon, not for many years to come.

Such gradual deterioration has happened in other places over historic times, and did not necessarily lead to revolutions, who often are bloody. Most people are cowards, to be honest, and will not risk their lives or well being for something that they are unsure about coming to fruition, no matter how dire the situation.

Hence dissent in many countries ends in nothing much more than crime and the odd bit of a riot, which violently get dealt with by police and military.

    2. ‘When it reaches critical mass there will be an inexorable movement towards a solution.’

When one is driving towards a cliff at high speed, the solution is to take one’s foot off the accelerator pedal and apply the brakes LONG BEFORE reaching the cliff edge.

NZ, just like practically every other nation, spent the period when it was possible to avert catastrophe with its foot on the accelerator, and is now at the cliff edge and travelling at high speed. There are no ‘solutions’.

      1. Unstoppable planetary overheating is underway and it is only a matter of time before humans find most of the Earth uninhabitable and the bulk of the food supply in jeopardy of gone.

      2. The global liquid fuel supply is now being propped up by unconventional fuels which require a lot of energy expenditure to acquire them. The predicament will get a lot worse as we transition down the downslope of Peak Oil.

      3. The natural system that provide stability in the geochemical and biological fields have been so disrupted by industrious industrial humans and the pollution humans generate they are breaking down.

For decades the response of politicians to information critical to planning has been to ignore that information; under Adern that is still the case: the Adern government is ignoring every factor that will demolish the system and will make life-as-we-know-it impossible, and pretends (lies) about the future.

      1. As far as I know in New Zealand society has three main pillars. Iwi and religion give the crown legitimacy to control the Nations resources and allocate them and in turn the crown gives these structures special rights unavailable to ordinary people like tax breaks and ability to issue license – just to name a few.

To bring forth a revolution in enlightenment would mean transforming one or all three of these pillars of New Zealand society. For Iwi there maybe scoop for radical constitutional change but for the establishment there is not, even the Labour Party has taken on the Key era slogan that no one owns water. They are rights afforded under the treaty and explained further in free trade agreements as early as the 2000 Singapore FTA and repeated in successive FTA’s including the recent TPPA-11. Those FTA’s control around $60bln in trade with huge consequences if some one wished cancel these contracts before investors have a chance to recoup there losses. So John Keys cancer is now one with its flesh and to simply rip it out would cause a schism of New Zealand’s greatest minds. That is why right wing extremists must be made to over play there hand.

By repeating themselves. And repeating themselves again. And again, and again right wing extremists over play there hand. Because they are the meme that never ends, they just necromance there friends. No one will admit to creating neoliberalism not knowing what it was, but they’ll continue necromancing for ever just because they are the meme that never ends.

  3. I am talking about a crisis like the complete unravelling of the major Western Economies in a time frame of ten to fifteen years , not a very gradual change to worse. It could come sooner. The underlying economy of the West is crumbling structurally as we speak ;it rides on a plethora of bubbles. Such an event concentrates the mind in a dramatic fashion, much like a prisoner awaiting execution. Solutions that would never have formerly been considered suddenly are worth considering !!!

    1. ‘the complete unravelling of the major Western Economies in a time frame of ten to fifteen years , not a very gradual change to worse. It could come sooner.’

Yes. Absolutely! Complete unravelling is absolutely certain because the economic system is an elaborate scam predicated on rewarding the looting and polluting of the commons; in particular, the global system is predicated on creating money out of thin air to facilitate the extraction and combustion of ever-greater quantities of fossil fuels that progressively damage the global environment…..the idiotic -and mathematically impossible!- growth meme that is constantly rammed down our throats by politicians and the media.

“Anyone who believes in infinite growth on a finite planet is either a madman or and economist.”

  4. An interesting take indeed, an imaginative biological perspective, and well written. Jacinda as “Mum of the Nation” at least much preferable to a former TV newsreader who had inexplicably and insultingly (to us) been given that name.
A question, and displaying, I suppose, my naivety: why is the 90-day rule such an issue? Why would any employer want to take someone on, train them up, and then, if they are at least reasonably satisfactory in their job, ditch them after 90 days? Makes no sense to me. And if an employee turns out unsatisfactory, why should a small-operation employer keep them on?

  5. It boggles the mind to think anyone would gush over Prince Harrys girlfriend. Or is she his fiancée now?

  6. “Labour reckon they couldn’t tighten things up because it was a New Zealand First bottom line to retain the 90 day trial and fire period”

Another reason left-leaning NZ First voters will feel betrayed, and hopefully choose the Greens to pull Labour to the left in 2020.
