Heraclitus was a distant relative of Nick Smith and here is discussing the idea of flux, in this case a “swimmable” river degrading into a “wadeable” one and thence into one that gives your legs gangrene. Nick and old Heraclitus had frequent discussions on the nature of reality and Nick misinterpreted the old man’s teaching by thinking that they meant reality didn’t exist and so you could say any old shit with impunity.
