ECan accused of ‘bending the law’ over consents for water bottling plants
Campaigners are taking legal action against the regional council for allowing bottling companies to take billions of litres of water from underground Christchurch aquifers.Aotearoa Water Action (AWA) believes Environment Canterbury (ECan) “bent the law” by letting two firms, Cloud Ocean Water and Rapaki Natural Resources, to siphon off water from neighbouring bottling plants in Belfast.
AWA spokesman Peter Richardson said the group is taking legal proceedings against all three groups in an attempt to overturn the consents.

I say all foreign exploitation of water should be banned immediately.
The fear is that banning foreign exploitation of water would breach previous free trade agreements, I say screw those previous trade agreements!
On a warming planet, fresh water will be the only thing worth keeping. If we allow foreign interests to start stealing our water in the huge quantities they are they will become dependent upon that supply and they will start militarising their access to it.
We need a political party that demands the end of foreign water exploitation who is prepared to stare down the threat of the free trade deals that attempt to cement external access.
We must stop allowing our water to be exploited like this, it is madness.
I say charge them through the teeth. If they are making a dollar a bottle for something they get here for nearly free we should charge them 50c for each bottle and NZ could be rich again.
We could at least lower New Zealanders multitude of taxes and improve services.

The government doesn’t have the right to put a royalty on water with out consultation and compensation. I’d be like British people just showing up one day and telling you what to do.

Okay, lets stop exporting NZ BUT also stop importing the rest of the world.
Can’t start complaining now, we are just getting what most exploited countries have had to put up with for the last 100 years or so.
