When ever you feel the world is becoming too dark to bare, something happens that just provides some vision of hope doesn’t it?
Nothing swells my heart quite like people who gather to rescue whales.
The shocking number of pilot whales that have recently beached in the beautiful Golden Bay is tragic and painful but the desperate attempts to rescue and save as many as they can by the human beings rushing to their aid is as endearingly beautiful as it is tragically comical.
We can’t lift the bloody things, and they take hours and hours and hours to rescue, but the people keep turning up in huge numbers to throw the pilot whales back into the water while the pilot whales gather in huge numbers to throw themselves back onto the beach.
The bond this combined stubbornness creates is an emotional attachment to a moment that connects every one of those mammals forever.
The best of us as a species can move mountains.
Many respects and love to those people who rushed to help those magnificently clumsy creatures, your kindness is an important reminder in a world frightened by power and Trump that goodness has not melted away..
Their time would be more productive helping people
Dave it is helping people. Animals are a part of our being and not just there for the greedy to exploit.
I do agree that many many people need help and that the excesses and wealth held by a few needs to be redirected to help those in need.
Our failing recognition of how inequity and disparity grow is directly connected with out inability to empathise with others and act accordingly.
Whales, native animals and plants come well ahead of human greed and destructive exploitation of the environment and other living things.
Helping whales is an expression of the good in people. Selflessness is uplifting indeed.
I look forward to watching you save flies using the same argument.
The total amount of fly spray is sufficient to suppress no more than half the population growth of flys, the rest die with in 2 days, so what if we halve that? Get real son

You may perhaps be too young to know about Rewi Alley, a Kiwi in China who reported the anti fly fervour and why it became a problem.
I well remember the popularising of DDT and later analysis of some of the damage it was causing and continues to cause today. A legacy of ignorance.

Flies have an important function
Mao made an mistake ordering the destruction of flies and when China came close to achieving that within their populated areas, they found a problem with their absence.
So policy was dropped.
Flies are an important part of the eco system. Humans are a temporary nuisance and have destroyed large parts of the ecosystem.
It is indeed helping people.
The totality of problems to be addressed is way beyond any individual.
We therefore have to do WHAT WE CAN.
Some have big energy, some have less. No amount is too little or irrelevant.
None of us exist apart from the universe and all of us are of the universe including those hapless pilot whales…
This is the kind of anthropocentrism that makes the left look dated and out of touch with what is happening to the planet, especially the environmental crisis and the advanced state of biodiversity loss that will come to harm us in the end…we are the dominant species but we lack empathy and responsibility.
Some people are amazing and enlightened.
And some people are not.
On the same news day our caretaker PM distresses an animal for his and others entertainment.

if THE PEOPLE CAN RALLY TO WHALES WE EXPECT THEY SHOULD VOTE AGAINST A GOVERNMENT THAT THE LEADER BILL ENGLISH BOASTED IN LAST WEEKS “STATE OF THE NATION ” SPEECH THAT HE WAS PROUD TO REMOVE MANY THOUSANDS FROM THE DOLE.
MANY OF THOSE ARE NOW LIVING WITHOUT A HOME OR A CAR NOW AND KIDS ARE WITHOUT SUPPORT EITHER, SO WE DO NEED TO CORRECT OUR CARE OF OUR FELLOW CITIZENS TOO JOHN.

Most definitely a priority. Redistribution of wealth and desperately needed changes in the building of NZ’s self dependence and resilience.
The current architecture of our community is geared to foreign profiting and local dependence on imports.
Wealth extraction, resource extraction, terminal growth of consumerism and shafting the “lower classes”, added to loss of free education and many public service functions: leave little space for a peaceful future.
Intensified repression and conflict are both creeping towards waking the sleepy public.
