McVicar is a scary creature, he went with a government group to that state in America that put criminals in tents (I think the sherrif got the boot eventually) then he went to the nordic states and looked at prison systems in both and thought the US was the best one… says it all really.

We probably need about 150 people in prison over the whole country, people that need to be kept safe for themselves andfor others, although I would probably argue that most of them have serious mental health problems. The rest could be doing community service, cleaning rivers, painting pensioners houses etc.

We live in a dumb punitive society!

  2. I don’t know how this man could post something like that.

    1. Taking someone’s life whether its justified or not is still taking someone’s life – blood on your hands.

    2. Why did the Police not shoot him in the leg, why does it always have to be fatal. We always hear of people being shot and they died. I thought Police were trained to shoot to maimed, try not to kill.

What happened is sad for the family and also the Police involved in the shooting. What that guy said is totally uncalled for and what if this was his son would he hold the same views.

  3. I think you’re giving the NZ Police far too much credit and respect in this article. In a normal stand-off situation, there is no way a man with a machete would need to be “put down” by anything resembling a competent and professional police force. There are so many other ways to deal with this sort of person (e.g. pepper spray and tasers to name two very obvious tools). Unless this guy rushed the police or a civilian with his weapon and needed a rapid response (and that may be the case?), this incident should be treated as a murder and the police officer involved charged as such.
