Metiria – she fought with the workers and the poor
Metiria stood with the Indian Students fighting exploitation and deportation in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Church.
Metiria stood in solidarity with Unite Union workers who took strike action to defeat zero hours contracts.
She has been subjected to a vicious avalanche of manufactured outrage from media pundits, vilified by the rabid right wing and betrayed by opportunists within the left.
Her crime- to fight for the unemployed, beneficiaries and the poor. A lot of people are sickened by what passes for politics in this country.
As a Socialist, I say Thank you Metiria for being on our side fighting when it counts.

I’m at the point now where I think there has to be some serious attempt at putting an end to this sort of political sabotage by un-elected pundits from the right wing.
I would suggest a formal petition calling for Patrick Gowers resignation , Partially as punishment for him personally , but moreover , – as a warning to all other Dirty Politics practitioners that this sort of media interference will not be tolerated in this country.
She’s not dead.
She’s just not going to be in Parliament.

Metiria’s own words when she made the confession:
“I was a single mum, raising my beautiful girl Piupiu while doing my law degree, and I was on the benefit. I had a great case worker at what we now call WINZ, who treated me with respect. I had the training incentive allowance as a grant to help me pay my fees and childcare. I had great support from my family and my baby’s dad, and his family too.”

i don’t think it dents at all my case that the exercise was both ill thought out and clumsily executed..

Thank you Jo for a heartfelt tribute to Metiria. I too admire her commitment to physically stand with and be counted amongst people fighting to be heard and treated with dignity. I wish she was going back into parliament with respect and admiration, representing the masses who have so little real (not mere lip service) representation
I don’t think she was betrayed by “opportunists from the left” – she got the various levels of support that you would expect from different quarters. She certainly wasn’t betrayed by the Green Party MPs and membership who would have supported her if she had continued to fight (not withstanding the two MPs who resigned, of course).
