MEDIAWATCH: Ummmm, if Today FM was so great, why did it rate 1.4?
There has been much written about how incredible the Today FM team were.
Really?
A lot of talk about the big media careers in front of the Hosts.
Why?
Put aside the madness of MediaWorks Management being spooked by a woke Lynch mob against Magic Talk led by David Farrier and The Spinoff and the lack of spine in staring them down.
Put aside there being no research to show ‘A Balanced Mic’ would be a rantings winner.
Put aside the genuine need to move demographics from Boomer to Gen X.
Put all that aside, the product itself was terrible.
It fell to 1.4. That’s the lowest rating ever, and it happened because the market decided it was shit!
That despite $9million in branding!
The Hosts were bland, the topics mediocre and they had no idea how to use social media to generate interest in what they were doing.

Tova was utterly forgettable, Duncan was talking about his feelings all the time, if anyone did offer an actual opinion they were forced to back down, I can’t honestly remember anything Llyod did and I think Polly talked about anal sex once.
Other than Polly talking about anal sex, Today FM was given the result it deserved.
The market spoke and it said, “ZB thanks”.
Today FM could have green great but poor decisions early on led to something that simple;y wasn’t interesting to anyone with options, and seeing as that is a lot of folk, it was a Station looking for a frequency that no one bothered to tune into.
What Today FMs collapse really tells us is that the global economic recession is about to hit us.
MediaWorks are owned by Oaktree, a US Private Equity firm.
Oaktree bought MediaWorks distressed debt, then bought the remaining stakes off the other investors.
Private Equity firms take on debt themselves to finance their deals.
The investment only works of the thing they buy, e.g. MediaWorks, can generate enough cash to pay the debt repayments.
Interest rates on debt have now gone up so the repayments are higher.
Therefore the asset (MediaWorks) has to generate more cash.
The business model does not allow for Today FM to spend $9 million on reformatting then lose $1 million per year.
Money on the table, not one person from Oaktree ever listened to Today FM, they simply looked at how much money they were haemorrhaging from increased interest costs and slit Today FMs throat without any mercy.
What we are seeing with the demise of Today FM is the impact of those global interest rates increasing and that is not going to stop.
Inflation is increasing, Reserve Banks will continue to lift interest rates and Today Fm is merely the first canary in the global recession mine to die.
There will be far more ruthless throat cutting coming.

I accidentally landed on the station once and gave it a listen – it was a beige circle jerk with an invited guest and the host polishing a government endorsed opinion on whatever topic.
It took me a few seconds to figure out what was.
Just pointless creating a station to a er be the same one sided crap as the MSM.
Probably if/when the government changes then having another anti right voice questioning government could have been handy but we saw the cowardice of media under the Key government when hard questions weren’t asked either so I doubt they’d have been much even then.
Tova is forever tainted by closeness to Ardern, Garner is loud but lacks depth both do have talent though, if only they used it for genuine journalism and asked real questions.

I don’t think that a crappy radio station going offline on a small island in the South Pacific is a bellwether of international finance.
You can spend millions on branding but it was yet another woke media company that nobody wanted to listen too. Since woke have cancelled most people, a woke station was never going to rate as few like to listen to people put down others constantly via identity not actions.

What that tells me is that you can spend as much as you like on (re)branding, PR bullshit, lobbyists, consultants and spin, but if there’s no substance behind it, it’s pissing money down the drain.
