  1. Winston is a “big lie”. How anyone takes this old conman seriously is one of life’s greatest mysteries

  2. NZ version of Trump. He virtually lost it during the Winebox Inquiry where he was unable to prove his assertions – although one suspects there was something to the dozens of assertions made.
His party is all about him and those subservient to him.

  3. White hate toward non Whites has been deeply ingrained in the White psyche for 3,000 years.
Invoking White hate of non Whites is very easily achieved especially by the right wing.
The media always promotes majority right wing White prejudice and ignorance because it sells.
Peters learned by 1970 that licking White arse is a guarantee of popularity and is very profitable.
Whites need a brown to justify their prejudice and Peters, Jones and Stealmore fill that role.
Peters and Co know that Maori hate is the lowest hanging fruit and will keep them in Parliament.
The 2023 election was won by the right wing with one policy
Blame Maori for all the worlds problems to Invoke centuries old White hatred of non Whites.
and elect a hard right wing Maori bashing Government.
Its what Muldoon did in 1975, what Bolger did in 1990 and what this lot did in 2023.
And the White voter always takes the Maori hating bait like piranha fish on methamphetamine.
For many right wing Whites their Maori hate has become their lifes purpose their reason for living

  4. Distrust in politicians is not new. Nor is distrust in Big … whatever. Back in the day, the system, man, was always working against your interests, and always looking out for theirs. No disrespect to politicians who did care about people and the community. No disrespect to the captains of industry who really did get a warm feeling from producing something of use and from providing employment opportunities for the community, often intergenerational. Most folk didn’t question too much back then. After all, the two big World Wars passed pretty much under a media blackout and any critical voice was shut out. But as Noam Chomsky was later to expose in his book Manufacturing Consent, legacy media were in fact complicit in misleading the public, or in simply not reporting what was really happening. Many of my generation at the time were not very aware of what was happening in Indonesia, right on our doorstep – although I believe the Australian and NZ Press were a lot more forthcoming than in North America, But the lies of was happening in Vietnam were being exposed. How could anyone in their right mind who have lived through the 60s and 70s believe in Big Politics? Or in Big Business, Big Tabacco, Big Oil … Big Technology? You just can’t trust that shit. Not unless you’re batting for the dark side. Or simply willing to turn a blind eye. Who was it that said, the truth is of no consequence when your salary depends on ignoring it, or words to that effect?

Nothing has changed. Except now we’re living through both neoliberalism and massive changes in communication technology. No wonder the number crunchers in the Democracy Project are finding ordinary folk, once so naïve, so trusting, are shifting sides.
