MEDIAWATCH: Luxon final interview on Waatea for 2024
Waatea media, in particular their brilliant Gallery Journalist Claudette Hauiti, broke the story of heavy handed policing in Opotiki and how bad the 2024 budget was for Māori, gets a final 10 minute interview with the PM to explore the Government’s problematic relationship with Māori.
His argument is rents are low and more Māori in school are positives.
Claudette knows her stats and she undermines Luxon’s assurances on Māori housing because she knows this Government cut $40million from Māori Housing and $25million from Māori education services.
Luxon claims Māori have moved from Emergency Housing but Claudette points out the Minister has no idea where those Māori have actually gone.
Luxon responds by attacking Claudette personally for not asking about Māori in mathematics.
Claudette responded by asking why mainstream education is failing Māori when they do so much better in full immersion Māori schools.
Luxon points to some programmes but flounders, Claudette pushes Luxon on Seymour’s plans to remove Māori cultural events as legitimate reasons to be away from school.
Luxon then lectures all parents about taking their children to school.
Claudette pushes National supporting the Treaty Referendum, Luxon gives his usual spin that it’s the MMP reality.
Claudette asks ‘did you put coalition before country’.
Luxon claims he is not and that it is all Labour’s fault for not bringing the country with them.
It’s important Luxon fronts to Māori media to explain what he’s doing and Claudette is one of the best Press Gallery Journalists Māori media have.

Surely education comes before attending cultural events. There are students in school from many races and cultures do they all get the opportunity to skip lessons . Learning your culture is a great idea but it should not come at the expense of the 3 Rs.
Another dumb comment from a stupid person who happens to be a pommy immigrant, do your homework you dopey hua Māori schools teaching culture and language achieve higher results. Even Stanford backed this up when looking at literacy in these kura.
We often pine for serious interviewers and serious journalism.
But honestly, we need serious interviewees too, don’t we?

Trev you are thick pom the journalist highlighted how Māori children in total Māori immersion schools succeed better than those attending mainstream. And this has been a known fact based on NCEA results for many years. So are you capable of deciphering what this means or do others on this site have to do it for you.
