  1. or it could all just be evolutionary/generational change. My Mum reminded me yesterday that when she was in her late teens, early 20’s that the rhetoric of the previous generation to her was saying exactly the same sort of things. Letters to the editor (social media of the day) complained endlessly about Elvis’s hips being a danger to the young, people living together out of wedlock, children born out of wedlock, young girls ‘going on holiday to Australia’, Young people not going to church, lack of respect from the young to the state, women demanding the same rights as men and how they should just get back in the kitchen, homosexuality should not be talked about and remain a criminal offence, Uppity Maoris, Catholics, Jews and Asians and what their place in society should be (can you guess?), dirty hippies, music too loud and incomprehensible, Men with long hair, women in short skirts, no women in public bars, no women allowed to use HP without their father or husband countersigning, any sign of culture or higher thought to be derided, Men encouraged to show no emotion, women derided as too emotional….the list just went on and on. Fast forward 50 or 60 odd years and what do we have? All the previous complaints now laughable but we now have our own older generation complaining about the young and casting about for blame. Some things never change. To blame “Big Tech’ and suchlike is almost conspiratorial in my view. It’s just the way it has always been.

    1. Good luck trying to get letters to the editor or blog comments printed today, if they are not of the agenda of the neoliberal woke.

      1. and yet here you are making your opinion known. I don’t think it has ever been the case that letters to the editor weren’t screened and edited for offensive comments. FFS, your comment is in reply to a newsroom article that has garnered no response from ‘the woke’. This all smacks of ‘angry old men shake fist at sky’. The real enemy are the far right tossers feeding you this anti woke bullshit.

    2. Good stuff 6ft4. Agree with all that, however I feel that the younger generations are waking up to the mess that older generations have made, won’t acknowledge, and left them to deal with. Pissed off in other words. And this is how they roll. Everything is done on their phones. (which are almost part of their anatomy).

      1. My mate, who is a white 50+ told me he felt actual relief passing on the burden of custodian of the world to someone else. At least we didn’t unleash MAD and are still here to enjoy/reflect on our moment in the sun. Most my age are at the peak of their professional life, enjoying a warm dry home, with money in the bank (one way or another) and looking forward to a fairly comfortable retirement (or retired already). I imagine our grandparents felt the same about our time on the telephone when a letter would have sufficed. Twitter is a fad and will be surpassed by the next bright idea. I’m just glad the young never took up those god awful ‘google glasses’ (?) that you wore with real time video upload.

  2. It’s all distraction on the path which leads to extinction via CO2 emissions that overuse of technology is exacerbating.

  3. Couldn’t agree more Martyn.

Thought David Cohens article excellent but terrifying

  4. Why do people use Twitter? How does it add value to one’s life? If I wanted to entertain a bunch of tripe views I’d watch the 6 O’clock News.

I imagine Twitter is a bunch of bitter woke people nobody wants to employ because they’re a nightmare – and fanatically Tweeting. A basket-of-unemployables?

  5. +1 Frank the Tank

‘team woke’ is being supported and assisted by big business and none of the acolytes seem to be able to point out the irony or the hypocrisy of this.

+ Also team woke supported by the Media. Media bosses don’t want to pay for decent journo’s and investigations, – that costs Money!!! Instead ,get rid of the brigade of employed experienced journo’s and move to ‘youth’ and ‘diversity’ and paid for advertorials which is so much cheaper to pay than what was formally considered news and what was formally considered journalism and what was formally considered an investigation.

  6. Could be a good idea to educate ourselves as to what ‘woke’ and ‘anti woke’ actually are. As a 50 something white male, I’m constantly embarrassed by the ‘anti woke’ brigade who mostly seem to comprise of white 50+ males, all claiming ‘victim’ status and alluding to some sort of conspiratorial plot to ‘shut them down’. It’s like I’ve stumbled into some sort of ‘Fox News’ website. Could it be the ‘anti woke’ have been conned by right wing propaganda that is demanding this demographic ‘take back control’? If you are expecting me to nod my head to the ramblings of the Hosk, Peter Williams et al as examples of ‘anti woke’ then you will be disappointed. I’d rather be considered ‘woke’ than ‘asleep’. To quote Dylan..’your sons and your daughters aren’t yours to command’ and ‘you better start swimming or you’ll sink like a stone’. As true now as when we was young.

  7. You’re inventing things nobody ever said…. but that’s what the people who whine about “cancel culture” do.
