  1. They’re never interested in what’s been revealed, they’re always far more interested in how it was discovered, presumably so they can then ensure similar things aren’t discovered in future.

When Nicky Hager published Dirty Politics, the energy that went into hunting down Raw Shark (the hacker who revealed National’s filthy antics with shit-stirring character assassins like Cameron Slater) was staggering when compared to the effort that went into addressing National’s grubby underhanded behaviour. John Key basically wandered around shrugging and claiming Hager was “a conspiracy theorist”, and the rest of National were falling over themselves to screech, “Nothing to see here! Move along!” Or, “Look, politics is a robust activity that requires a measure of intestinal fortitude, and you can’t be too sensitive about these things.”

If the public weren’t so apathetic about this stuff, National would have been consigned to the political wilderness for years. Some people refused to read the book because it was allegedly “leftie nonsense” and not worth their time. It seems that sometimes “public interest” journalism isn’t as interesting to the public as we would like. And sometimes, a nation really does get the government it deserves.

  2. Not at all cheesy Wensleydale. Loved the bit about National moving people along. And the whole example of bright invigorating and searching material in Craccum – what does it mean I say daftly? But 88 pages of it? There must have been some good poetry Bomber, We commiserate with you about getting through security at airports.

Don’t be critical of the public being apathetic. It’s just that our learnings go deep, thanks to our good education, what! And I hail your chorus – “Look, politics is a robust activity that requires a measure of intestinal fortitude, and you can’t be too sensitive about these things.” Could someone, somehow make a limerick out of that? We can’t get it through our heads that we have all been swimming in a goldfish bowl for about a century. Even when we go overseas to look at other places and people we just gape and quickly return to our own aquatic world! We are prey for the bigger fish, but now are losing the coral reefs etc where we used to hide for safety. Help!!
    To start –
There was a young man from a farm,
Who said politics can do some harm
    But robust or not
    We’ll stop the rot
So Big Farmer need not alarm! (I know it’s poultry. And pigs might fly.)
