Luxon shows his hand – Election 2026 is on 7th November
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon confirms 2026 election date of November 7
What is most interesting about the date is that they dared not announce it during his State of the nation Speech because it was so meaningless and empty that the Election Date announcement would have overshadowed the entire speech, that’s how vacuous Luxon is.
The next most interesting part is that they clearly don’t believe any of their own hype that the green shoots of recovery are here and are waiting as long as they can in a Hail Mary pass that the economy will turn some mythical corner altho it is never going to turn, as Bernard Hickey points out…
The problem for Luxon is his Government is relying on a 1990s and mid-2000s strategy of businesses and households stepping forward to spend their savings and borrow more to invest and spend in shops, car dealerships and in the housing market. Back then, the private sector replaced the Government’s stimulus because spenders were younger and less-indebted, interest rates were cut by more, and businesses used to borrow from banks to expand. Neither have done that since 2019.
…after 2 years National have nothing to show the people other than crony capitalism and culture war revenge fantasies masquerading as social policy.
This announcement, days after the Speech highlights that National are frightened.
They can’t roll Luxon this close to the election and they are simply hoping the economy responds to their vandalism and mutilation by edging house prices up to ensure their rump voters get out to vote.
That’s all National have, hope and desperation.

I suspect it will be close. And it will partly depend on how the economy/job situation/cost of living goes over the next 8 or 9 months. National may have failed, but Labour has failed to inspire. They’re still the same neoliberal economics but nibble around the edges that they’ve been 4 years now. No guts no glory.
Agreed it will be a colossal victory for Labour.

If Luxon had any decency he would have apologised for how disastrous his Government has been and announced that the election was taking place tomorrow. The sooner we can put this Government out of its misery the better.

Have any of these ministers been to a supermarket lately, it is so depressing to see a half leg of lamb for $62 , gravy beef $25 cauliflower $9 how do families afford decent food ?? and not a word from this government about the cost of living and its bloody shameful
Looking back over the past 2 and abit years we have had a “coalition government” considerable damage by this coalition has been done and could well take decades to fix if at all.
We have a finance minister who is totally Out of Her Depth when it comes to Fiscal, Financial and Economics. It does confirm that whilst she got a degree at university that it being in English Literature just doesn’t cut it when dealing with the NZ Economy etc.
We have seen a Slash, Cut and Burn mentality by a government completely Out of Touch with reality and bending to the demands of Big Businesses at the expense of the Poor(the 99% aka Luxon calls us Bottom Feeders).
We have seen an Often Missing In Action, Weak, Invisible, Cowardly, Spineless and Incompetent Part-time prime minister who is also Out of His Depth. Being a prime minister shouldn’t mean constant seeking of Photo Opportunities because NZ is not a Corporation or a Business. And yet that is what Luxon is treating the country as. We are so over seeing this Uncouth Idiot called Luxon wasting OUR money on His Ego Quests.
Now that the election is only 10 1/2 months away it is likely those National MPs in their Ivory Towers will crawl out of their Woodwork and start courting the voters. Be aware when this happen and anyone that votes for a National, ACT or NZ First MP will find the MPs will be all chummy leading up to the election(and all future elections)but once the votes have been counted you will be discarded and Not Listened to. Your usefulness for their Self-Serving Wants expired on Election day.
They will be coming to a Market near you in order to appear all Nice as Pie whilst denigrating you and your family at every opportunity. Remember these are the very Same National, ACT and NZ First MPs who have denigrated Our Teachers, Our Doctors and Nurses, Our Police, Our Firefighters, Our Low Paid Women and so many others.
