Labour’s newly announced 4000 Mt Albert Kiwibuilds is a huge win for the new Government…
Housing Minister Phil Twyford has announced the first of the Government’s KiwiBuild homes.
It’s purchased 29 hectares of land at Unitec’s Mt Albert campus in Auckland, about 9km from the CBD.
Around 3000 to 4000 homes are expected to be built there.
…what this shows is that this Government is focused on cutting deals that will see them actively step in to be the lender of last resort in ensuring people can buy the houses. It is a realisation that the State must be far more active in the house building process than the joke free market situation National allowed to create their speculative property bubble.
It will need the state to step in as lender of last resort if it is to ensure Māori and Pacific Islanders can afford them along with Millennials and Get Xers.
Labour must ensure design is ethical, environmental and positive if it wants to make it a blueprint for more builds around Auckland and the rest of the country.
It’s a welcome first step and Phil Twyford has shown the Left he deserved the faith they have put in him to find solutions.

According to pathetic Bridges and Collins, it was all their idea, all ready to go this term, if Natz hadn’t lost the election … !!! Yeah right, after nine long cruel years, causing more and more impoverishment for far too many Kiwi families, to the extent of being forced to living in cars, sheds, tents etc, through no fault of their own!
Petulant, vindictive Natz are in a bad place at present, stating this concept was all in the planning, then come out condemning the idea and calling it a failure! Obnoxious, lying Natz not in a very good place at present. Good!
