Labour offers free first year of uni in 2018, boosts student allowances by $50 per week
The Labour Party has today announced they will offer a free first year of post-secondary school education in 2018, and an extra $50 to student allowances if elected to Government.
Labour’s free* education policy is free for some people, but not all people. It’s limited to people starting University for the first time, but promises to extend this in 2024.
The extra $50 a week is pretty meaningless when you consider the mountain of debt most have to live with.
Labour aren’t really trying with this policy, they sense they can probably win without promising too much and are starting to allow the caution to creep into their positioning.
If there was a really good reason to vote Green, this is it.
That Labour have shirked off an opportunity to be really radical here for mediocrity is a worrying trend.
TOP are suggesting a youth payment of $200 per week to everybody between the ages of 18 to 23, to be spent as they wish. This would go a long way towards seeing them through a tertiary education.
Candidate vote Labour, party vote Green, back to square one, I suppose.

Don,t agree about the policy. It is $100 all up so will be meaningful to families with a first time student.

I think some votes are going to swing back to the Greens as people feel more confident of a change of government
