Conspiracy theorist Billy Te Kahika jailed after organising Covid-19 protest
Conspiracy theorist Billy Te Kahika Jr has been jailed after organising a protest on the first day of the Covid-19 delta lockdown in 2021.
Te Kahika and Vinny Eastwood, who are also bandmates, were both found guilty of intentionally failing to comply with the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act by organising and attending the protest.
It took place outside the TVNZ building in central Auckland on the first day of the level 4 lockdown on August 18, 2021.
The pair appeared at the Auckland District Court on Thursday where Judge Peter Winter sentenced Te Kahika to four months’ imprisonment, which was met with murmurs of disapproval from his supporters.
…protest against the Government is important. The Government had just passed some of the most draconian restrictions on civil liberties in peace time.
Yes Billy was a dick for protesting.
Yes Vinny was a dick going along with it, but no one caught Covid at the protest and past the emergency of the moment, now is the time to be showing mercy, not vengeance.
All we do by throwing these clowns in prison is martyr them and risk something happening to them in prison.
Now is the time for mercy and bridge building again.
They should have been convicted and discharged.

As time has passed and we now shrug our shoulders at thousands cases and 20-30 deaths a week its clear the extended lockdowns were an unjustified draconian restriction. Jailing someone for protesting them is crazy and will further entrench anti politician sentiment. Lets be honest the charges should have been quietly dropped.
Isn’t pleading insanity still a thing?

They should have been sentenced to sit in on a 5th form science virology class.
It’s an immature response from authorities to send a stinging message to those who transgress The powers that be feel like they are loosing their power of the masses and must send a message maybe…who knows?
Amazing how the virus was defeated by just ignoring the government fear propaganda and half baked campaigns. Half a billion dollars of expired vaccines could have paid many wages.
Hopefully they can appeal, especially Vinny Eastwood as he probably doesn’t have the constitution for prison.
They’ve both actually probably suffered enough. A speedy appeals process and a reversal of the custodial sentences would be appropriate.
Vinny is a strange one, he was on YouTube before it was mainstream – I’ve never met the guy and don’t follow him.. though it’s clear Vinny Eastwood is in his own category of performance art and is fragile despite his bravado.
I haven’t followed their cases, so I’m only commenting on a surface level. Vinny, Vinny, Vinny. Dear lord, what is with this week.

I don’t like Billy ts bullshit but prison is over the top our justice system is minted ans stop blaming the govt it’s the judge that sentenced him. Some sort of commu ity work would have been a better sentence.

hang on, hang on.. when did Vinny Eastwood do his protest? Wasn’t it in the first few days of lock-down??? ??? ? If so, weren’t the first few days of lock-down found to be illegal?
I must have the timing wrong because we don’t change laws then retrospectively charge people here in New Zealand. Also, I actually don’t know what the official charges against him are/were, so I may be doubly off base.
I do hope people find some way to lend support to Vinny though, even if it’s just a quick post like this.
More state overreach from an autocratic and organisationally (cosily intertwined, scratching backs, votes for policies?) corrupt Govt.
Does anyone not believe that judges get told what to do all the time? It doesnt usually take the form of “You will do this in this case” (Although the Moana case was looking like that) but more in terms of Guidelines etc The Govt policies are X and they are aiming for this outcome overall. These are the priority areas and so forth. In the last 5 years in particular, the appointment of judges has become very political and this is what you get.
Agreed, a custodial sentence is over the top here. One wonders if they were white and protesting for BLM or Climate if they might have been treated differently?
With things like drive by shootings not getting jail time. but organising a protest does , our judges are looking pretty average at the moment
