  1. It seems to me the problem here is a failure by Stats NZ to distinguish between “gender” and “sex”. If they were asking about your sex, that question would have been fair enough, although maybe lacking boxes for “in transition to male” and “in transition to female”, and one for the tiny minority who are naturally born with intersex genitalia. Sex is a biophysical characteristic, biology produces only so many answers to the question “what sex are you”.

    Now gender, of course, is a question of identity, just like ethnicity (“race” is an invented category and there is no bio-physical test that can tell you what ethnicity someone is). There can be as many categories as there are people. I’m not sure what statistics on people’s gender identity (at any given time) would be used for, but then I’m not sure exactly what statistics on ethnicity are used for either. Whatever it’s used for, if Stats NZ are going to collect data on “gender”, as opposed to “sex”, their forms need a lot more boxes.
