  1. Has the ghost of Benny Hill possessed this New Labour Party? They are the most incompetent bunch of smug arrogant cretins I have ever witnessed in one place….. and they are running the country and controlling our futures. How long until young and poor Kiwis start claiming asylum in other OECD countries? Their futures are in serious danger here in New Slumland.

  2. “This is so embarrassing for Kelvin and you honestly wonder who the hell is advising him”
You know who is advising him, who is Kelvin’s boss? Why that would be the Prime Minister Ms. Jacinda “lock them up and throw away the key” Ardern. Ultimately Kelvin has to TOW THE (LINO) PARTY LINE, the protests at Waikeria showed us that Jacinda Ardern with her minister of KKKrections, has no interest in reforming prisons or supporting the human rights of those confined in them. I mean if Jacinda and Kelvin actually think that this is OK then they are going to get a short sharp dose of resistance from ordinary NZers that treating our prison population like they do in Russia and the US is NOT OK.

  3. “…so why he seems to think blaming PAPA or the Māori Party for inciting the riot is a solution to the hole he has dug himself in is utterly bewildering.”

Maybe it isn’t a solution. It could be a signal of intent – the intent to do nothing. The guidelines for MP behaviour includes some pretty tricky parameters, even for MPs who are intelligent that way. They are responsible to the party agenda, and must acknowledge that, as public leaders they are asked to act in a considered way, but not pushed on that point, and further on they have to choose which part of the electorate to represent. Given those limitations, he could simply be saying: I represent people who want to allow prisons to punish people in extra-legal ways (because that’s what I say the majorty of people think) and my party wants to push restrictions on free speech, so I’m fuelling that with a (made up) example because my electorate will not question it, and I want to remain a Labour MP.
He might actually believe what he says, but he’s also endangering his position. His approach says that Labour aren’t interested in prison reform, except as a future-tense sound bite, and the people they represent now are the type who cause problems and then blame the victims, so status quo till whenever: “Change is coming… 800 less maori are in prison… what do you people want?!” Now that Labour think locking up a schizophrenic man for 7 years without rehabilitation for kissing a woman on the cheek is absurd, they’ve indicated that some thought must go into things before stating absolutes. One of his advisors could win a free lunch by suggesting Davis rest in “consideration” rather than escalation. Top marks go to Rawiri Waititi’s effortless neutralisation of the stupid by commenting, “Yeah that quote wasn’t me, I had no part of that, never knew the pamphlet existed.” Case closed. Outclassed in every way.

  4. Arthur Taylor has drawn attention to the disproportionate number of “Seff Effrican” and ex UK screws employed these days in NZ, who are hardwired not to like Māori people anyway, notwithstanding all the rest of the crap coming from corrections to abuse prisoners.

Kelvin and Labour are trying to suck up to the hang ’em high brigade and switch voters rather than pursue natural justice and rehabilitation for inmates, and modernise the prison system. As long as we have poverty and low wages, and punitive sentencing, we will have full prisons.

  5. Unbelievable!! : “I said from the beginning that politicians involving themselves in some Corrections matters would only serve to embolden and encourage more events that endanger the lives of prisoners and staff,” Davis said in the House. (nz herald)
Why else are all those 120 MPs on six figures, if not to monitor and regulate the conditions of the populace? Oh, wait, I forgot, sorry, they’re really just in transit to a consulate somewhere…sigh…

  7. This is where virtue signalling takes us.

On gaining power they told us they weren’t going to build any new prisons because they were going to be “transformative” in some undefined manner. Four years later we have skyrocketing gang membership, more violent crime and such inhuman conditions in prisons that it fomented a riot.

Building a new prison may be ‘bad’ but double bunking in a Victorian cell is far far worse.

    1. This is where Governing in the interests of drug pushers who increase violence towards women children families and communities get you.,,,, ballooning prison numbers.

How long since Judith Collins and the Nats did their successful Dirty Politics operation on behalf of the Alcohol industry Andrew ??,,, How many extra victims ,,, how many extra crimes ,,, how many kids having a fucked up childhood and more prone to drugs and violence for their futures?.

Combine that with a two faced and often dishonest ‘war on (other) drugs’ and you get exploding prison numbers since the ‘war on other drugs’ began,,,, but it was all a big mystery according to bad pretender Judith Collins when she was Justice or Police misister,,,,,,dishonest cow IMO.

New Zealands bad justice and prison system is in second place to the worst ,,,, the Usa.

The Andrews and right wingers in NZ are not interested in better systems and outcomes, or examples of them……They would rather follow the worst examples and privatized prisons. ‘We are not like Europe’ is their excuse dripping in racism for ignoring evidence and going ‘hard on crime’.

A good example was Andrew making some stupid Mark Mitchell like comment about German Shepards ( which are alright dogs but a bit excitable ),,,,,, ,,, that was his take after watching this video on the cruel failure of the Usa and its HUGE racist, violent, prison system…. with ballooning prisoner numbers ,, . Much like ours.

  8. Good work and professional action by the experts in Corrections Dept in resolving the riots at Waikeria. Kelvin made the right decision to leave it to the experts. What do you right-wingers want to do? Get Collins, Banks, Brown and Bridges to lead a posse assisted by tanks and helicopter gun-ships to nuke the rioters and everyone else out of existence. They could have hosed the rioters down which may have resolved it sooner, but any other action would have threatened the safety and lives of the staff, police and other prisoners.
The rioters should be subject to maximum punishment – longer sentences and the gangs broken up.
