An innocent man who was mistakenly arrested and held at gunpoint by police says he is traumatised and has not been offered any apology or help.
Brandon Moase said he and his friend were ordered to their knees by police yesterday in a street in West Auckland, handcuffed with guns pointed at them, before being released 15 minutes later after police admitted they’d got the wrong people.
THEY SAID:
Police said during their search they found Moase and his friend and thought they were connected.
“Further enquiries determined they were not involved and they were subsequently released. Police apologised to the two men. Victim support referrals were also made,” the police spokesperson said.

“Police needed to act quickly in order to keep the community safe as this was a fast-moving and high-risk situation,” said a police spokesperson.
Not the first time Police shot the wrong person – by MISTAKE.

FAST & FURIOUS policing was the mantra under previous police commissioners.

In my view; Commissioner Coster has been a breath of intelligence and moderation in the delivery of NZ policing. But old habits die hard. He now needs to act, fast & furious.
Meanwhile, the IPCA will look into this.
The IPCA is not a Court – it was a body set up to monitor police behaviour and in particular, to ensure all evidence pertaining to cases, was presented to proper Courts. I know. I was one of the first inspectors assigned to the IPCA in 1986.
Overtime, the IPCA has usurped the role of our courts. Courts are where culpability for killing a person, should be determined. That is, a proper Court of law, open to public scrutiny and where witnesses may be cross-examine by competent counsel on both sides of any case which is before such a court.
No more back room justice for the establishment.
Perhaps the country needs a Judges’ son – to be SHOT BY MISTAKE – before our Judiciary at the highest level say: ENOUGH.

IPCA was so named 1989 when I was already I parliament.
In 1986 the same unit – had a different name – but it evolved into the IPCA.
Same beast different name.
That “evolution” has continued- extending to usurping the role of our Courts.
I was also advised that some 39 former (now geriatrics) took umbrage at the position I take over the Crewe homicide – where with specificity I have demonstrated that I was expected to change my evidence before the Royal Commission of Enquiry into the fabrication of evidence to convict Thomas.
That 39 went to bed thinking of me?
Today’s victim should at least be thankful he wasn’t given a fat lip and then charged with assaulting a police officer.
That’s a standard modus operandi used keep the attention away from dodgy police behaviour.

Ross, might it be better if the police never detain anybody suspected of committing a crime just in case they didn’t do it ? Perhaps you should explain this to Andrew.
I wouldn’t have raised the Crewe case if you hadn’t, but back in the 90’s, a Wgtn academic offspring of a top cop told me their dad said the police did get the right person for the Crewe murders, but that the police blew the case by planting evidence.
When you have a flash emergency situation whereby a serious criminal offense has occurred, you are not in the position to act in self doubt,… you need to act, and you need to act fast. Its a problematic situation for those in law enforcement because it could be a single offender or a group. And if its a group, chances are its organized. If it is organized, you could have diversionary tactics used and greater harm to the public. This is why anyone suspicious is targeted. Much of which relies on individuals discretions by members of the Police Force.
No one can get it right all of the time. The best policy for civilians is to ‘hands up’ showing no weapons and comply. It is a sad fact that innocents have died by Police shootings. No security system is EVER 100% secure. I was appalled by the killing of an innocent man on the North Western motorway in Auckland. A mans life taken forever and from his family and children.

Now whether we believe in authority, and Gods appointment is another issue. It could be viewed as much as Confucianism and pandering to the right wing, and authoritarianism, and certainly we have seen enough governmental abuse with Hitler, Stalin and Pol pot to name a few. But they are the extremes. And as it is in the military whereby lower ranks are free to question and even disobey orders that contravene the U.N rules of war or the rights of humanity to a fair trial , we have a civic duty to legitimately challenge wrongful authority.
It is a delicate balance.
I for one, would prefer to live in the bush in an old tin shed well away from all of you and be left alone. I am getting too old for this. Peace be with you all.
Wild Katipo – my tongue was in my cheek here. The police didn’t actually shoot one or other of those traumatised gents, the headline was misleading. I stop for cops who stop me – others shoot the cops.
As an aside, Confucianism, apart from it’s sexist element, has worked well in China, Japan, and Sth Korea, in establishing strong family relationships. The Tao Te Ching also served well as a treatise on personal conduct and government; whether the latter’s philosophy of meekness as a path to survival would serve us well with current societal issues, is another matter, but it can work fairly well surviving in violent families.
