    1. Don’t turn this into a political argument, its not. Your statement demonstrates as much head in the sand mentality as corrections, who operate whatever the party in power is. If you seriously think everyone will be nice if Labour ever get back into government, and suddenly corrections will have all the answers, you are as deluded as some of the rat-bags they have to deal with. Courts or corrections should have the right to add onto anyone’s sentence if they do not complete courses and councelling – not just attend, but complete. And they should not have the right to refuse, or have to acknowledge they are a scumbag before getting into programmes. Just DO IT !!!

        1. I concur, Theodore. Chris is parroting knee-jerk jingoistic slogans and isn’t contributing anything meaningful to the debate.

His nonsense may be welcomed at a Sensible Sentencing Trust circle-jerk, but it won’t gather much traction here.

  1. The Natzis, the Justice Department, and Corrections not suprised Key and Co live in their nice safe gated communities?

The breakdown of civil society is what keeps these people employed, most are professional bludgers who don’t give a rats date about the average person, I wonder what the verdict would have been if the lady was the wife of a high profile New Zealander.

  2. We do need to be careful that high-profile cases with plenty of emotive content don’t skew the overall picture.
According to Corrections re-offending rates are reducing. I don’t know how accurate that is but I certainly hope so.

    1. Reoffending by those with community based sentences may be down a litte – although the stats are based on very dodgy data. Reoffending rates by those sentenced to prison have not changed. 50% are back inside within five years.

  3. They need to put more into the next generation to stop the cycle of abuse and destruction.

In the meanwhile they need to do more to try to rehabilitate offenders.

If there are no jobs and people don’t have food or shelter then they will offend. The social problem is related from WINZ to Corrections to Education.

Social welfare is not just for the beneficiaries it is for society. Rich and poor. We all benefit from having a net at the bottom for people to fall to.

Under neoliberalism people have forgotten that.
