A carve-up in gift wrapping: Trump’s peace plan puts the sacrifice on Ukraine
1. Ukraine must abandon its claims to Crimea
2. Cessation of hostilities along the current front line
3. The US will lift all sanctions imposed on Russia
4. The biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, will be handed over to US control. The US will begin energy cooperation with Russia, including the transfer of Russian gas through the Russia/Ukraine gas pipeline supplying Europe. (Presumably the revenue previously paid by Russia to Ukraine for the use of this pipeline will now go to the US}.
5. Direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to begin, but will not be backed with security guarantees by the US.
6. Ukraine must not seek to join Nato, but Ukraine may pursue EU membership
7. Final conclusion of the minerals agreement between the US and Ukraine, giving control of Ukraine mineral rights to the US.

What worries me most is the normalization of redrawing borders through force. If this ‘final offer’ is accepted, it risks unraveling decades of efforts to build a rules-based international order.
It shows the utter folly of Ukraine’s decision to form an alliance with the US and NATO in order to wage war against Russia. New Zealand politicians should take note, but I doubt that they will. Instead they will assure themselves that, unlike Ukraine, they can come out of a US led war in good shape and with their “sovereignty” intact. They won’t of course. If they are not overwhelmed by their self-created enemies, they will be butchered by their Five Eyes friends.
