  1. This is all kind of silly – when you send soldiers – any soldiers – into a war zone they will kill civilians. That’s what they do – it may not be what they intend to do at the outset but it is the inevitable outcome. Every experienced soldier will tell you this.
Maybe instead of all the post-event hand wringing we should acknowledge to ourselves and to the young men we send overseas that innocent civilians are going to die. They will have bombs dropped onto their homes, schools and hospitals, they will be caught in the crossfire of fire fights and – if they survive – they will be starved and deprived of the basics of life.
That’s what war is – to pretend that NZ soldiers have some type of higher morality or that shells from NZ artillery and helicopter gunfire should somehow avoid civilian casualties is kind of sad and naive. The current media puff and huff over Operation Burnham is an expression of this nativity that avoids the reality of war and lets us perpetuate a myth of NZ soldiering as some how immune to the inevitable consequence for innocent civilians. We should instead face up to and acknowledge reality that no matter how well intention-ed NZ soldiers may be they will continue to kill civilians. Ask any current soldier or veteran who has experienced overseas combat.

    1. I get what you’re saying
      War crimes?
War IS the crime, and we need to fully realise the big picture of that and question what we’re doing in any American war
But what Nicky is doing is bringing us to that position , by highlighting what war is really about, not the whitewashed version of school and bridge building .

    2. I’ve experienced many many operational tours in UK MOD and NZDF, and cannot fathom how anyone can defend a deliberately planned retribution mission where our obligations to international treaties and laws of armed conflict are blatantly pissed on. Brook no class indeed.

  2. Peter

You have the courage to put your real name – a quality which evades many who comment on this (and other) blogs – to your opinion.
I respect you for this quality.

I not so long ago hosted former SAS colonel Jim Blackwell to dinner – Botswana restaurant – shortly after I’d had a few sessions with Wayne Mapp.
I like Jim. But we disagreed.

As I read your contribution however, it seems that we have a different view of the role ANZACs and other forces who (confining one’s self to Post WW2) go forth to liberate denizens of foreign field where “we” were not invited.

Vietnam for example – where ANZACs and Uncle Sam were defeated by a peasant army – after more than a decade of carpet bombing (War Crime vis Dresden) and agent orange and etc etc.
Defeating communism and delivering democracy – was the raison d’être.

Or, contemporaneous unlawful occupation of foreign states e.g. Syria and Libya where the game is to steal oil https://www.rt.com/news/496918-us-stealing-syria-oil/

These events, may I suggest, expose the true reasons for war.

What gallant fellow are we- who invade another sovereign state – invariable (post WW 2) as a supplicant of America.
America which of course always acts within the law except for the invasion of Iraqi which the UN and Chilcott said was a war crime.

Which also produced Abu Ghraib https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_torture_and_prisoner_abuse among a multitude of crimes.

Bye the way. Haven’t heard much of Assange lately! Nor Chelsea following ‘Collateral murder’ in Iraq; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYTxuW2vmzk

Well. That’s history –best let it lie – like Kiwis in Afghanistan.

But just for the record: https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2019/01/15/guest-blog-ross-meurant-where-america-retreats-chaos-follows/

Once I was a believer : John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and Liz Taylor. But! It was all Hollywood mate. Make believe.
    Like Disneyland.

  3. i’m surprised u didn’t add something like – if u don’t want to b shot don’t live in a war zone ! or – if u have nothing to hide u have nothing to fear …
peter in addition to spelling incorrectly …. unless u meant to use “nativity” u seem to have missed much of what matters here
    – to describe the concern people are expressing over the deaths of several civilians at the hands of men who represent us as “silly” is odd….
for what it’s worth, over decades our soldiers have forged a reputation for courage & honor – they would be turning in their graves over this stain
the use of taxpayer money & the conspiracy to stop the matter being investigated by any means possible is the norm these days.

    1. It wasn’t my intention to blame civilians for what happens – my intention is to highlight the hypocrisy of non combatants for idealize soldiering as something noble and done with utmost good intentions. Regardless of nation, religion or time in history soldiering has always been the same.
It is in some ways difficult to blame the young men and women who find themselves in the situations – often Lord of the Flies like in nature – where their darkest impulses are given possibility.
Movies based on real events – The Mark of Cain and The Kill Team. Look up interviews with US veterans from the My Lai Massacre.

  4. Let me stress I do not agree in any way with killing civilians but I do get tired of the in-hindsight surprise and dismay of the media when it happens. Let’s stop pretending we have any moral authority when it comes to war and be real about it before the event. Lets commemorate our soldiers brutality the same way we acknowledge their bravery and sacrifice – an ANZAC day for killed civilians.
Did UK Special Forces execute unarmed civilians? https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-53597137
Yes – apparently they did. So did US Special Forces – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kill_Team_(2013_film) as highlighted in the documentary and subsequent film.
What happens if you give mobs of young men – who have spent months training to kill – irresistible fire power and then let them run operations in a hostile environment crowded with non-combatants?
