  1. ‘Seymour didn’t seem that passionate’. Well of course not.
“Any publicity is good publicity, ‘ (attributed to P.G. Barnum). Seymour does not really care about making a better society for everyone. If he did there is no way he would be in ACT.
ACT needs disgruntled white trash, who feel that Maori are somehow getting some advantage over the rest of us(remember how ACT nearly ceased to exist but for the one skidmark of Epsom and how it clawed its way back by leveraging people’s unhappiness). They need to keep stoking that fire somehow.
National and New Zealand First state they will not allow the bill to become law. If they are telling the truth(!!!??) then the whole reading and debate on the bill is a waste of time and taxpayers money but it will put ACT and Seymour in the spotlight and gain support from discontented Pakeha and Tauiwi who feel that their lives will be brighter by keeping Maori poor.
The best example of ACT’s attitude to Maori was when Don Brash told the world how he disliked hearing greetings in Te Reo on RNZ (evidently too much effort to just turn to another station).

  2. the “Doctrine of Discovery” is a philosophical, legal and polical framework that extend from a series of
papal laws starng from the 15th century. These papal laws gave Chrisan governments moral and legal
rights to invade and seize Indigenous lands and dominate Indigenous Peoples. Over me, those who
invaded and seized Indigenous land established colonial governments which maintained these systems
of dominaon, and these colonial governments were founded upon the same entlements and
assumpons of the original papal bulls, namely:
    – The supremacy of Europeans and European Chrisanity over non-Europeans and non-Chrisans
    – The entlement of European Chrisans to seize non-European lands, waters, and possessions
    – The entlement of European Chrisans to exploit lands, waters, and people for the purposes of
    profit
    – The polical and physical dominaon of Non-Europeans
While human rights have progressed over me, many of the paterns of oppression and privilege that
persist today can be traced back to the oppressive and racist entlements granted through the Doctrine
    of Discovery.

Here in lies the problem. Davids very rhetoric…
“Seymour spoke of how beautiful the Treaty is, which seemed oddly Trumpian, but he said the principles introduced over the last few decades are the problem. He claimed that we are identified by race first and foremost, not by being humans.
Yet the very reason the treaty and it’s principles exist is because the Doctrine of discovery was based upon racist theories…that the indigenous people were not human.

The Doctrine of Discovery was based upon racist theories that Non-Europeans were not human, and
therefore had no property or human rights, and could not safely govern themselves. Based upon that
theory, Europeans ignored nave property and polical rights, and set up governments on Indigenous
    lands.

David needs to stop and think are Maori equal in everyway to Pakeha in our country?
If so why do the statistics not show this?

    1. While the Papal authority claim exists the Protestant reformation showed that it was a false claim, the most quoted Christian text says “God so loved the world…” There is no distinction between nations regarding salvation and Christians were prominent in the early anti slavery movement. As your last question reveals the Maori people do not share the same success as other people so they obviously do not have any advantage.

  3. “Seymour said he wanted parliament to speak for those who want equal rights. He talked calmly, without emotion, like a robot, and finished in resounding silence.”

It appears only 8 % of parliament want to speak about equal rights, the other 92% have no issue.
Seymour looking to grow his base which makes this nothing more than a vote grab and supporting Hobsons Pledge.

  4. Nick, Seymour did Dancing with the No Stars in lycra, do you think he’d do Fight for Life with Helmet, given it’s a contact sport?

  5. Not keen personally on Bomber’s “positive engagement” with the enemy approach. But experienced media channel pundits operate in a different world to many of us, so it was interesting to get Nick Rockel’s take on this show.

Mr Seymour needs a good towelling wherever he goes really, he swaps kids hot meals for dried up sandwiches–if they are lucky–but is happy to bring back semi autos, fund the Tobacco industry and grab state assets for right wing Charter schools. The worst kind of neo lib Atlas opportunist–funded by shadowy billionaires as per other populists around the world.

Incel Dave’s racism is really in the service of removing obstacles for corporates, such as Māori intellectual property and control of vital resources. He could be on a loser with local Govt. though because a number of Councils have actually experienced the benefit of Māori Wards, whereby local democracy and participation has been expanded. Councillors have met and got to know people that previously were deemed “scary”, that has been my experience in Tai Tokerau and has been duplicated in other districts.

  6. This was the pivotal moment for me:

“Grant asked Helmet whether he thought everyone in NZ should have the same economic and political rights and whether Tangata Whenua should have special rights. Helmet clarified that this wasn’t about race but between two sovereign groups. ”

Helmut didn’t respond with a clear yes or no to David’s question. Instead, he ducked and dived to avoid it. That is most telling, and I would like a clear answer from the Maori activists.

Overall, I got the impression that Helmut just want an open-ended settlement process which pacifies endless grievance.

    1. They are not just “special rights” they are terms that were agreed similar to a legal contract. Go and learn up on what terms of a legal contract actually mean in practice. You have a clear answer, it is written in the terms of the Treaty.
